Guys, will be back Tuesday, the last hour or so today was spent with man under the lower floor kicking an old warm air heating system duct worx to death to clear space under there. 9 radiators to upgrade from 10mm to 15mm pipe and two more which are brand new installation.

It never fails to amaze me how flights can be cheaper than trains ?

We all have colds here so I’ve been turfed out of bed by the kids who are sat with their mum watching TV while I make drinks and food to take up to them

Another night with 5 hours in to the car and the house batteries- we also ran an oil rad for an hour to air downstairs and now because I am I no the lounge with the dogs the temperature is rising from 18.6 towards 19.

For once we seem to have a lazy day so I may get time to cut some duct work ready to lay under the patio for more power cables

Can anyone offer a comparison for ground floor with a crawlspace before and after insulation? The hatches are going in anyway for the pipe upgrades so wondered if underfloor insulation is worthwhile?

I really like the train line app. That linked with PayPal or similar makes it all qui k and simple with no need for ticket machine delay.

No figures to give you, but you will feel floor insulation immediately.
Our old house had rockwool suspended on netting put in. It was a mid winter day as they were doing it and i was sat with feet on the ground when they laid the rockwool beneath my feet. The difference was instantly felt going across one foot, then the other.
It also cut down on drafts significantly.

When we moved in here with no underfloor insulation, it was the only thing that screamed out at me. Feet constantly cold.

The other half was happy to have the rockwool netting thing again when we discussed how to do it here. There were still drafts with this system at the old house where the wool and netting werent snug, but it was vastly improved.
I decided i would rather have the joists full of PIR, completely sealed, unlike the rockwool, especially with the heatpump and it being colder up here.

The downside is i found no one will quote for such a job so it is very much DIY, even local handymen declined to quote.
If you want to pay someone to do it, you have the option of rockwool with netting or the horrendous idea of spray foaming the entire area, which will hit resale ability and mortgage ability.

The benefit is i found gapotape which makes install faster, and no need to foam the gaps, although its pricy in comparison, but the correct tool for the job.
The PIR was from the seconds company.
When finished we will have a full 100mm of PIR insulation underfloor, completely sealed, for about 300 quid more than we paid for the rockwool install.
The ongoing saga of remedial work is holding up the entire process hence why so slow.

I was off on Thursday and it was 0deg C outside. I measured a few temps in the house- Victorian build.

Spare room- 100mm PIR in wall and coom ceiling of roof.
IR surface temp reading 18 degC

Son 2 room, 1 pir in wall in dormer surface temp 18deg C
Coom ceiling 7deg c ( he’s off to Paris with school next year so away for a week and that’s pencilled in to be upgraded.

My room, dormer and coom not insulated at all, temp 5deg C.


I did rock wool under floor and saw a 3/4 Deg uplift a dozen years ago, now need to finish bits off and think a membrane for preventing wind washing will help further.
