Not really sure what they mean by delivery valve holder..

Having read the 'bleeding' instructions i think Flintray has a point:- the Delivery valve is the one we suspect of being stuck open - its holder is the bit on the top of the injection pump that the injector pipe screws on to.

The point is that if you have an 'awkward bleeder', then even if you take it to the specialist to check the delivery valve, you may still have to partially disassemble the delivery valve to do the hardcore bleed once you've got it back home. So you may as well try that first as it may well clear the fault in the process.

although i do appreciate that disassembling parts of the pump with springs in requires extra care - it doesn't help that that diagram shows two different versions of the valve; one with one spring and one with two.

I think it would be a hell of a coincidence for the delivery valve to stick right after it's run out of fuel - not impossible but I think that might be pulling thinking in the wrong direction (assuming no junk got sucked up and pulled through the filter?)

with no fuel through the injector at all the timing doesn't matter

I'm by no means an expert or even very experienced with these engines, gave one a bit of a poke years ago and what's about it

I'd be suspicious of the the throttle control rod that runs through the injection pump, either not hooked up right or now working right

If everything looks good I'd fit the injector, get some brake cleaner and get someone to squirt it into the air intake while you crank the engine over, see if you get anything (don;t go crazy spraying it, start slow)

you should be able to get the engine to run on the brake cleaner, a lot of the time getting the engine running with brake cleaner or with a tow (if it's a car) is enough to sort out any air in the system

there's a starter motor in your photos, are you hand crank only or can you use that to spin it faster?

It crossed my mind that if I take it over to Aaher, they can certainly take it apart and make sure there's nothing stuck. I am then back to square one bleeding the darn thing again! I know the guy there took the slider fuel adjuster out, because he asked me which round it was fitted! Luckily had a photo to show him. I have unscrewed the top bit before, as suggested by matey at Asher, enough to let fuel flow through and hopefully bleed it. I guess I could take it right out, spring etc. and see. madness.

Ureeka!

Thanks all for all of your suggestions. I bit the bullet and undid the top of the pump and removed the spring and plunger, as suggested, and then pumped fuel through.
I managed to get it back in without things flying about. Connected up, and noticed a different sound from the pump, or somewhere, and wow, a couple of turns on the handle and she sprayed out of the injector. Took a while to reassemble and change the oil (diesel leaks straight into the sump from all of the bleeding..) Wow, some puffs of smoke and she clattered into life!! Joy o joy. Just an hour before my backup generator arrived!!!
She sure was rough to start with, coughing, half dying and then resurging. Clouds of smoke from the exhaust, which had filled up with desal from all of the spray tests, but 10 minutes later, sounded as good as new.

Might have a sip of wine tonight to celebrate!

Thanks again all....

Been reading this thread for a while now and all the troubles the op has had. Have absolutely no idea what a lister engine is (and less inclined to find out now :hysteria: ) after all the trials and tribulations detailed.

Just wanted to say what a great example of perserverence and determination to win through in the end, and a really big pat on the back to all those knowledgable folk that helped out with ideas to help along the way. What a helpful and talented bunch you all are. :praise:

Id not be turning the thing off for a loooong while now mind.

I think the bit I posted on the 3rd November mentioned that.

Yes, Finray, I think you did! I've always been told to never fiddle with an injector pump! Looking at the exploded view of the Bryce pump, with 24 internal parts, filled me with total dread. And then I thought tat if it went pair shaped, I would just hand them over to the good man at Ashers and let him put it back together. I guess something was a bit stuck and thankfully released itself. It did make some interesting creaking sounds after cranking by hand to see if it wold spray through the injector, and a couple of other previously unnoticed sounds. Well, hay, I am now able to remove injector and pump! It's very irritating that there isn't a fuel isolation valve under the tank. It means draining the tank when ever you need to change the fuel filter.

I will be topping up with fuel every 5 minutes after this! (the joys of living off grid  )
