The ups and downs of the wood gasification stove..
Year 12, and it's had it's moments. Here she is, the Orlingo 40 kw wood gasification stove..
She's outside in her own house, with the Ackvaterm storage tank behind. Over the years, I have developed as efficient plan as possible to minimise use of power and loss of heat from the stove. I run it max heat, 90 degrees. In the morning, if the stove is cold, aa good bundle of newspaper, lit with fan on and both doors open. Throw in kindling,, and larger logs.
Shut the upper door and rake out ash. As soon as flames are roaring up through the logs, shut both doors and the flap at the back of the upper chamber. Riddle the tabulators to clear tubes. I usually, open the top door and flap and give the logs a poke to make sure they are well lit.
She's now in full gasification mode.
The tank and stove are about 25 meters from the house (a very draughty cold and listed Victorian house). There is a timer in the house, usually set for 5 minutes, 8 times a day, but manual override when the house temperate drops below 15.
I will fully load at tea time, and run a good heat at bath time (hot bath and bathroom). The timer goes on to auto, 5 minutes at midnight and 05.00 to keep the cats warm. Before going to bed, I turn the stove setting down from 90 to 60, which stops the fan and the circulating pump coming on. The wood goes into smoulder and will easily relight in the morning as soon as I turn the stove temperature up to 90.
Coming up next, the pro's and cons of the stove.
