Solar thermal

#1

Post by Fintray »

I have five sets of solar thermal 20 tube panels, these were bought from Ivan in a previous life and were his companies standard panels.

The frames and headers had been fitted to my garage roof but the tubes never installed (a heat pump rendered them redundant for me) so are now available for sale at £50 per panel or £200 for all five.

These will need to be collected, due to the fragile nature of the tubes ,from Aberdeenshire

If interested please PM me.

That was nice and quick, I imagine that will give you quite a bit of space back once they’ve gone

Glad they're gone.

I'm interested to understand the thinking of whoever is installing new ST these days? PV is so cheap to buy, easy to install, and the output is more valuable!
12x 340W JA Solar panels (4.08kWp)
3x 380W JA Solar panels (1.14kWp)
5x 2.4kWh Pylontech batteries (12kWh)
LuxPower inverter/charger

(Artist formally known as ******, well it should be obvious enough to those for whom such things are important.)

Someone with an outdoor swimming pool? As they are so much more efficient than pv it would warm the volume of water up a lot quicker in spring...
2.0 kW/4.62 MWh pa in Ripples, 4.5 kWp W-facing pv, 9.5 kWh batt
30 solar thermal tubes, 2MWh pa in Stockport, plus Congleton and Kinlochbervie Hydros,
Most travel by bike, walking or bus/train. Veg, fruit - and Bees!

Sure, that is a usecase. However PV fed into a heat pump is more efficient.

and how do the prices compare? The heated pool is just a "nice to have," so if you have a handy south-facing retaining wall below the pool you can have a system for just the price of a heat exchanger - once you have the panels.
p.s. (And fit them vertically to derate them in summer to avoid boiling the pool!)

So's my wife!

Guy that bought them already had a system with 60 tubes used to pre-heat water for a wood burning boiler so some of these are going to expand that.

I thought I'd have to wait ages to get them sold, two people wanting to buy the lot within an hour of going on Facebook marketplace and another the same the next morning.

Can you set searches or something to get notifications?

I do all my searches manually and not that often so would be good to know if you can store searches??

I didn't want to be all negative while you were still trying to sell them. But I just don't get it! Sure there was a time when PV efficiency was poor enough and PV prices were high enough, that ST made sense. However nowadays, I just can't make the case...
