What surprises me is how people running these death-force, fossil-fuel companies can justify ( to themselves ) their culpability into the destruction of the life-support system on our planet.

The rate of destruction is accelerating :-
- Fossil-fuel extraction highest ever and rate increasing
- Concentration of CO2, NOx, Methane, F-gas in the atmosphere, highest ever and accelerating

The majority of people are still voting to retain their fossil-fuelled, super-humanity and refuse to acknowledge the consequences.

The people heading-up the FF-companies are pyschopaths, fools and criminals.

These companies hire boarding-school / Oxbridge graduates who've had "the organisation" drummed into them and empathy for outsiders drummed out of them. The Nazis didn't build and operate the death camps just with psychopaths. They brainwashed ordinary folk to do horrible things.

It is a fascinating area of human psychology. We are all capable of doing horrendous things once our perspective is removed and we are inducted into "the club".

We are here because we care, but not all of us are optimistic about averting ecological doom. And by that I don't mean pessimistic about gathering the social will to make changes to avert that doom. Some of us believe already far too little, too late, to avert a crash. Some of us believe that there are NO sustainable solutions for 10 billion humans on this planet; that a "crash" is inevitable.

It's how we behave in the face of that which matters. I'm not at all sure that these executives believe there is no problem. Perhaps they, like me believe there are no solutions, that we are going to crash, not today or tomorrow, but inevitably. They might simply be behaving differently in the face of that. There are still moral issues on a sinking boat.

I worked with BP in the early to mid 90's on wellhead recovery projects in the North sea. We were basically clearing out the old infrastructure from and to 5mtrs below seabed level. In some cases for companies not existing anymore, some back to the early 70's.

The people I worked with were decent intelligent individuals with integrity and a sense of adventure. It was interesting, challenging work in incredibly harsh conditions and our logo was a starfish holding and working a broom.

Fast forward to the 10's where I worked with the company again in Azerbaijan and a more self absorbed, arrogant, entitled, shower of shite you'd be hard placed to find in a month of Sundays. I found them to be utterly reprehensible and sadly the Azeri's were imitating the behaviour, propagating it onward.

In the end I told them directly to go **** themselves and left. It was good to see the reduction back to human size in the eyes of the pseudopod I let have it. It was the right thing to do and in hindsight was the beginning of my self-induced exit from the industry.

A lot of the time you will find that the decent folk in these organisations can blinker themselves by focusing on the detail of the project and its execution in a safe, clean fashion.
Thus allowing themselves off the hook from implication in the bigger picture.

In the end though, it is what it is and you've got to make a decision based on who you are. I am very proud of my nephew who worked for BP for around 5yrs on RE projects then left the company to work with a 'real' RE company.

The higher up these companies you meet as individuals the odder they tend to be. They've long accepted the damage they are doing and simply don't care. I've seen it and heard it. They are in it for the money and chance to rise through the organisation for more power.

Beyond a certain point for some it isn't about the money. It is about power & control. Who runs and directs the show.

Maybe they eventually rise high enough where they are only surrounded by others similar to themselves and finally feel normal?

Bear in mind that the entity known as 'company' as we know it in Europe is only a little over 400 years old. A fair old damage multiplier is the company compared to the individual count of its parts.
