Thank you Joeboy - no worries if it's not feasible.

Hi Ratty, sorry to hear about the GLF closure, I guess that's just the way forums evolve. I certainly learned a lot there and had some enjoyable discussions, thanks to you and all the opther mods for making it a welcoming space. Glad to see you have found sanctuary over here, are you bringing all those spiders and creepy crawlies too??

Are you able to tell us what the size of the data base is and what your rough bandwidth is?
Failing that would it be possible to consider something like making it a ZIM file and those who want to self host/make available on self hosted hardware can?
Have a look a Kiwix as the project ..... There are lots of forums and knowledgebases that people can selfhost to make sure the information is not lost. I mean you can even selfhost Wikipedia if you wanted to
Just a couple of thoughts.

That's OK, Joeboy, thanks again for asking.Joeboy wrote: ↑Sun Feb 16, 2025 1:02 pmHi, we've had a look. Sorry but we don't have the server space. Apologies and some genuine sadness too.
cojmh, I'll look into those possibilities, thank you. I have no idea if I can tell you how big our database and bandwidth are, but I know a man who can

Depends - would they be welcome? I don't want any of them getting splatted with a rolled-up newspaperspread-tee wrote: ↑Sun Feb 16, 2025 1:19 pmGlad to see you have found sanctuary over here, are you bringing all those spiders and creepy crawlies too??![]()

Re: The Green Living Forum closure
Ratty, just login to the ACP and the database size will be right there on the General panel.Columbusrat wrote: ↑Sun Feb 16, 2025 6:09 pmThat's OK, Joeboy, thanks again for asking.

Re: The Green Living Forum closure
I found the database size, which is 1.59 GB, and asked our admin about bandwidth. We're on an unlimited bandwidth plan, and don't have any stats on
bandwidth usage. An upper bound guess based on the number of packets the network interface has shifted since the last reboot and the maximum packet size, with some back of the envelope calculations, gives 16.7GB/day.
I need to investigate the possibilities cojmh suggested. I don't want to archive it in a form that would require further admin, and very much want to avoid any situation where someone could gain access to any of the personal data on there.

Navitron did this eventually a couple of years after they closed doors and it was not a simple process but kudos for their efforts. It was up & running for a while as a viewable resource but as far as I can see, its now gone. It struck me when looking at it how fast some RE tech goes out of fashion/use. As a generalisation i'd point to solar thermal & LA storage, both good technologies but pretty much superseded these days.Columbusrat wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2025 9:04 am I found the database size, which is 1.59 GB, and asked our admin about bandwidth. The wayback machine carries out some of what you are looking for in a part readable but not postable forum but its not perfect.

All these forums have a lifespan as does this one. I'm hoping for decade+ rather than single digits but we never know what's around the corner. To all passing through, contribute what you can, when you can. You never know the good you'll do in another part of the world but at least you made the effort while the resource was there.

Yep, GLF has lasted almost 19 years. It does strike me that if we did archive it, the info would become more and more out of date. Though I'll miss being able to look back to check how old my phone is, when I last got my hair cut...
