self made insulation ideas
self made insulation ideas
Hi all
am very pleased with my insulation baking kitchen for a future project
In my location , nearby i can get high quality clay from a quarry for 11 euro a ton and straw or barley skins ( do not know the English word .... husk ? ) that i can source for 7 euro per m3
from left to right first is straw and clay , next is husk and clay , next is husk clay and coconut fibers , next is just sand clay and coconut fibers
The coconut was just because i tie trees with it but hemp should work too or horse, pig hair human hair from the hair dresser , as an reinforcement
All of those where worth the cooking and are super solid with different weight .... I was told that eco friendly insulation or even oil based insulation is costing in the region of at least 200 Euro per m3 .... so that should cost about 20
Not ony because of costs .... good to be a child too
I like clay as an material and prefer it to cement , lime or oil based , as not much enrgey enbodied
Just a thought

Morning Billi,
You would get on well with Kevin McCabe who was on Grand designs and is a champion of the age old skill of Cobb building.
For anyone who missed his creation on grand designs:

I actually might know him in person, with out being aware as he studied too (as me) at the same University and Professor Minke ....

Re: self made insulation ideas
Wow if that was to be the case then it is, indeed, a small world - we will all find out that we are related to frotter at this rate!

Re: self made insulation ideas
Nice, are they solely air dried? Do you have plans to test each units efficiently before going to larger production?

Re: self made insulation ideas
Yes they dried out in the open air and to my surprise very quick
the "husk clay and coconut fibers" is for me the best result , but have to find a alternative fiber
hope to get a hemp supplier locally as some farmers here now grow hemp again
Its mainly thought for the internal walls of the barn to the left .... but sure i will think about making boards for the whole roof insulation
Re: self made insulation ideas
Nice one, not heard of coconut husk being used before. Straw. sand and clay are the traditional ones I know of. I wonder if there are varied insulation values between the differing straw possibilities? Up here in NE Scotland its mostly barley so quite a large straw.billi wrote: ↑Sat Dec 11, 2021 10:38 amYes they dried out in the open air and to my surprise very quick

Re: self made insulation ideas
it is barley husk , the coconut is the fibers i cut out of a tree tie cord and need a replacement idea for but i supose i ask a local hairdresser or the horsekeepers next door , but hempwool is available tooNice one, not heard of coconut husk being used before.
