Even my paltry 2+ kw has managed 1 kwh the last few days .

That was a snapshot at 0815 this morning rather than a summary of the previous 24hrs. There was c. 6.72GWh of officially recorded grid solar yesterday (If I've worked it out correctly).

08:00 this morning 15% of U.K. power is leaving the country by cable.

15% being produced in U.K. by gas.

We need to find a better way to modulate grid frequency rather than keeping the FF plants running when we don’t need them…

National Grid is working to enable the grid to operate fossil fuel free when conditions allow by 2025 - I imagine there will be lots of clever technologies being implemented for giving the grid "inertia" without the spinning reserve the fossil generators.

How about hydro? A bit more of that (like the big Scottish ones that have plannning permission but aren't being progressed because of network access charges) would help...

Yes, hydro was my first thought!

A few big 24/7/365 hydro plants with high-mass turbines would do the job. Burning gas while curtailing wind is really frustrating.

Ooh, that's a good point, and given that the UK is around 40% RE generation (but last two years complicated by Covid and poor wind in 2021) and growing around 3% to 4% pa, then 2025 might be the year we see 50%+ of generation from RE, and perhaps a 30 min slot that's 100% RE? I'm only guessing, and also counting 4yrs growth from start of 2022 to end of 2025. Nice milestones to look out for though.

And another thought, we may be up to ~17GW of interconnectors too by then, which will presumably help both homegrown RE and grid balance. Fun times.

I have a feeling that we have seen an article saying that with modern electronics the spinning reserve for grid stabilsation won't be needed in future.
Anyone else remember it?

I thought the Nuclear power stations were a spinning reserve. I suppose Drax is also - but not sure if NG consider that as RE or not?

Nukes run flat-out 24/7/365 they can't easily react to changes in demand...
