interesting. I'm not sure that under-running the LED's is all that's required to achieve 200lm/w though; if it were that simple you could use a dimmable lamp and turn it down a bit.

You can buy ES lampholders if you want to do the job properly:-

mind you i did once get a buzz off a new 'vintage antique copper' style ES pendant i was fitting for someone: taking a shortcut i was screwing the lamps in with the power switched on and felt a buzz on my fingertip touching the thread of the lamp and the earthed outer of the pendant. The pendant had a plastic thread and the electrical contacts below; when screwing in the lamp the centre live makes first and the current conducts to the outer thread of the lamp making it live until screwed in further and the thread contacts neutral.

E27 screw type bulb holder , one gets them for under 2 GBP

good question; under-running may be a part of it, but i suspect they're using high lm/w leds which would be more $$ to make. The lamps don't seem that pricy though - unless they're subsidised by the dubai gov't?

Because they are NOT as good as the Dubai lamp spec,

7.5W for 1055 lumens, therefore 140 lumens per watt and life of 10,000 hrs.

The Dubai spec is 3 watts for 600 lumens (200 lumens per watt) and 25,000 hrs life.

Please provide a link to a Dubai lamp which you can have delivered to the UK.

The point seems to be that the Dubai lamps (not the standard Philips led lamps) are not available outside the United Arab Emirates even though they seem to have been available as far back as 2016/17 in the UAE.

There is a UAE website here and are the equivalent of about £5 but I don't think they export.

They are the ones in the "ultra efficient phillips" link I found. Not the Dubai ones, but look just as good or slightly better as more lumens. Might be an efficiency upgrade to my outside security lights which are are on in the hours of darkness, I cannot remember how many watts they are, I will have to check.

Very poor power factor though, but within the current rules,

LED lamps between 2W and 5W require a minimum 0.4 power factor. LED lamps over 5W and up to 25W require a minimum 0.5 power factor. LED lamps over 25W require a minimum 0.9 power factor.

As an electronics engineer I can appreciate the design but lighting is a very very small proportion of my energy use. Considering how much energy Dubai must use on air-con you'd have thought they'd have other priorities...
