Spot on Moxi, the issue relates more to Wales as the mines are (to oversimplify) high(er) up, so the water escapes above ground.

Sorry to all for the downer, but great news if the water(s) can be used to help reduce the need for FF heating. A lovely irony.

I used to work in a coal mine under the North Sea, most of the water we had there was seawater but there was some fresh water. Some of the 'fresh' was acidic, some alkaline and various minerals including ferrous deposits. Some of the pumps had to be brass as the chemicals would disolve iron / steel parts in short order. The old workings are still pumped and the water goes straight back into the sea.
There is a development fairly local to where I worked that is planning to capture this heat but I don't think they have started building yet.
