If we had left spuds this late there would have been no tubers left: slugs would have consumed the lot, even on a patio. We often get their trails up around the inside of cloches etc. Some even invade the house (ugh!)

Finally emptied the last container today, not a great harvest as the last seed potatoes (bought in Jan) were in real, poor condition when I planted the final one in September. But quality still great so no need to visit supermarket today.
I had read that if you plant them in Sept, they are called Xmas potatoes.

I have been growing potatoes in pots for about 3-4 years now and I find that they are much easier to do this way than in the ground.
I must admit that we use smaller tubs (30 litre with heavy duty handles) and I reuse the soil with fertiliser every year.
The reason I like the smaller pots is that I am able to lift the whole pot and tip it into a wheel barrow allowing me to go through the soil thoroughly to get all the potatoes, before storing all the soil in a builders bag for the following year. When I replant the following year I add the fertiliser (or manure sometimes).
Is really easy to do - but as you say they must be watered regularly particularly if it is hot.

Funny enough I have replaced my old 60 litre containers with newer 40 litre containers with 3 tubers in each. My first 4 planted a couple of weeks ago are just starting to sprout out. The new containers are breathable fabric so are supposed to air dry the roots and facilitate a better roof system.
I must say they are not free as cost of tubers, containers, fertiliser, etc, but the quality exceeds whatever you can buy elsewhere.
