North Sea Link has a nominal full transmission power of 1.4GW. Their commissioning plan was to open it at 700MW and then gradually increase power over the next 3 months. Guess that schedule is a little behind, but they should get there soon.

Hmm. With the 2GW AQUIND Link put in the bin last month, it looks like the UK might be losing another potential new HVDC - the 1.4GW "Gridlink" connection which was proposed between Dunkirk and Kingsnorth.

The French Energy Regulator the CRE has formally rejected a request for investment to fund the scheme, stating

"the GridLink project is marked by a lack of reasonable certainty on the costs and benefits attached to this project in a particular context where the uncertainties resulting from the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union remain strong"

Construction was due to start in 2022 and be operational in 2025. The rejection could be overturned by the French Government who are now reviewing the decision.

Neuconnect update - this is a proposed 1.4GW HVDC between the UK and Germany - they've just appointed Prysmian as the cable supplier. Obviously they're a huge company in the electricity distribution world, but they also did the cables for the rather unreliable western boostrap HVDC link between Scotland and England!

FABLink update - Ofgem has given the developers of FABLink until July 2022 to give a clear pathway to resolving current delays in planning and regulatory approval in France, or it will withdraw its "Cap and floor" funding approval (which was originally agreed in 2015), effectively killing another HVDC.

If the current situation doesn't drive Europe towards power interdependence and a reduction/end of Russian gas what will!

Small Viking Link Construction update

25% of the UK-Denmark cable has now been laid, and construction is about to commence on the two HVDC converter stations in Bicker Fen and Revsing. Start date now firmed up a little from "Q4 2023" to December 2023

Relatively big update on the UK-Germany "Neuconnect" link.

They've raised all of the capital required and construction is slated to start this autumn.

Reminder, it's a 1.4GW bidirectional HVDC interconnector running from the Isle of Grain in Kent, to Wilhelmshaven in Germany. Should be commissioned by 2025.
