Pylontech system expansion

#1

Post by Joeboy »

Hi Lads,

Looks like a couple of us have thought about expanding our Pylontech systems over the years. Got to be honest in this. I like the idea of the look of a steampunk homebuilt storage system as an addendum to the finish of the Pylontechs. It looks as if I could insert a spur off to the side of the Pylontech stack and have another 5kWh of storage. I have taken the closest I can to a cut and paste from Alan's thread and added it here.

Ah = kWh ÷ V × 1,000.
My current stack is 14.4kWh @ 48v so 300Ah before any degradation or operational parameters set on it. Each unit of 6 cost me around £700 so £4,200/300Ah is £14 per Ah.
Today prices are around £800 per unit so £4,800/300Ah is £16 per Ah.
These sealed units on Ebay come in at £490 for a set of 8 at 102Ah. The fast charge rate is limited to 40A and DOD is 80% but other than that they look as if they could slip into my system.

£980/102Ah is £9.60 per Ah based on 16 batteries of which I'd need 15 (,thanks Nowty).

I priced up these a few times. Plan similar to yours: whack a series string of 15x batteries in parallel to the pylontechs, let the pylontech BMS do the heavy lifting and get a simple balancer to keep the string in order.

However the price was always so similar to pylontechs that it wasn’t worth it. Once you consider you’ll likely have to buy 16x batteries and keep one spare and the benefit was wiped out.
Me- Yeah, that's kind of where I am in my head. I have made a stupid offer on 15 units, we'll say what they come back with. I like playing with stuff and that's the appeal (alongside the extra storage). Could easily stick another two US2000's up in that space and just use longer leads to hook it all up but that's too easy!

Stinsy- Yeah, it’s a fun project. Don’t forget: studs, nuts, washers, crimps, cables, etc.
I really wish you could show a saving when all is said and done. But the truth is that pylontechs show astonishing VFM!

Me-This is me convincing myself, Had a quick look and ITS Tech have the US2000C's at £990 each incl vat. The C part is no use to me as I am limited by my B's. £1,980 for two batteries. If i could chuck it together for say £1,200 all in, that would be pretty good?

To keep the momentum going, I'm going to re-do my old thread so it gives folk an idea how you go about building up your own Li-On battery system.

Its going to be called,

Lithium Cell Balancing at Nowty Towers - Resurrections
16.9kW PV > 109MWh generated
Ripple 6.6kW Wind + 4.5kW PV > 25MWh generated
5 Other RE Coop's
105kWh EV storage
60kWh Home battery storage
40kWh Thermal storage
GSHP + A2A HP's

Epic! Am I being dumb thinking of this for a maybe 25%saving in costs? A part of me thinks yes but the wee laddie inside fancies it, good on ye Nowty, truly epic set up.

I would order the new C's if you can wait a little while for delivery and stick the old ones on ebay and get silly money for them. Even if you go for a while without batteries you'll still be quids in.

You can use the new ones with old up to a max 16 units inc a max of 7 of the old.

I will be thinking it over next 10 days or so. Bonus today, son has tomorrow off for jubilee so we are heading down to Dover tomorrow morning and booked into the coastguard pub stopover for steaks Fri night. Ferry on Sat morning and in Bruges for lunch Sat. 8-) I will of course keep an eye out for RE related stuff whole away.

Got this quote in via alibaba for a 105Ah setup on 16 batteries, won't sell me 15! 1,242 us dollars to the door. About £950, with the potential for import tax (maybe) zero chance of replacement if failure plus the ancillary gear to make it work and stay healthy. I sadly have to admit. Selfbuild of lifepo4 is not worth it compared to buying pylontechs off the shelf :(

16pcs 105AH,to the UK(), freight: $186

Shipping by sea, to the door, DDP, about 60 days to arrive

So,the total price is:

Cell price +freight =

$66*16+$186=$1242

With 16pcs busbars +32pcs screws +32pcs washers

With the test data of each cell

Is that “duty paid” or will you get a bill afterwards?
12x 340W JA Solar panels (4.08kWp)
3x 380W JA Solar panels (1.14kWp)
5x 2.4kWh Pylontech batteries (12kWh)
LuxPower inverter/charger

(Artist formally known as ******, well it should be obvious enough to those for whom such things are important.)

Didn't get down to that detail. Been stung before, as you said. It doesn't add up risk/reward.
