New Octopus Tariff - Cosy Octopus for Heatpump Owners
New Octopus Tariff - Cosy Octopus for Heatpump Owners
There is a new tariff launching for heatpump owners called Cosy Octopus but I certainly wont be signing up.

Re: New Octopus Tariff - Cosy Octopus for Heatpump Owners
Isnt it a pretty good deal considering prices after April likely to be 75p+?
Re: New Octopus Tariff - Cosy Octopus for Heatpump Owners
I love the split cheap periods. But 6hrs of 19p really isn’t competitive compared to 6hrs of 10p on Intelligent Octopus!

Re: New Octopus Tariff - Cosy Octopus for Heatpump Owners
It does not look like a fixed deal.
I guess it may appeal to a non EV user, if someone does have small batteries its competitive to Eco7, more expensive cheapslot's but cheaper medium time price. So if you can avoid the peak rate by charging batteries in afternoon.

Definitely not a fixed deal.
And I still cannot get my head around those prices:

Re: New Octopus Tariff - Cosy Octopus for Heatpump Owners
Just wait till April then, as although the cap is being lifted by "only" 20%, there is going to be a consultation to ONLY limit that cap to a further volumetric rate. That will be fine for us solar and battery warriors during the summer months but it could be more difficult for us next winter.
"It was announced that the Government intends to consult on amending the energy price guarantee scheme after April 2023 based on volumetric rates. This means paying a cheaper rate for the first amount of energy you use, and then if you start using a lot of energy, the rate you pay will go up."

I agree that the current government subsidy being used by millionaires to heat their swimming pools or whatever is unsustainable. But saying "the government subsidy only applies to the first 600kWh of electricity used in a month" or whatever really does kick EV-owners.nowty wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 12:42 pmJust wait till April then, as although the cap is being lifted by "only" 20%, there is going to be a consultation to ONLY limit that cap to a further volumetric rate. I also agree that tariffs are irrelevant in summer for us lot with solar arrays and batteries. Sure it is nice that the little grid power I do use is super-cheap off-peak electric, but the quantity is small.
However winter is where it gets real. I can chose between gas and electric heating, can timeshift a significant proportion of my usage, and can store cheap-rate electric for later use, just like a lot of chaps on here. But for all that to be beneficial I need the off-peak electric to be cheap enough!

Or a share of a windfarm in Wales or Scotland to offset.

Just had a look, and we only exceed 600kWh/month in January (705kWh last January) and possibly December (I think we may well hit around 800kWh this month, but last December was 598kWh). That's including running an EV (although a fairly small one).
