EV charger install pre-check 101 (with video) for dummies
EV charger install pre-check 101 (with video) for dummies
..well its a popular book range.
This popped up into my feed this morning for no reason whatsoever, but it is darned useful visual guide to clearing the fog of confusion that many householders will experience when looking at an EV charger (on a scheme or otherwise)
Recommended viewing for the family: clear video, & clearly highlights the bits of info you need to assess yourself prior to purchase as either an ebay bargain or via the govt route they ask you questions that are answered here too.
As the govt is now only wanting smart intalls its worth mentioning that SWA ought be 3 core 6mm maybe with a datacore if at distance from your home, dodgy wifi type considerations, the you tube channel Artisan Electrics might also be worth looking through his copious quantity of videos to see if he's fitted & gives insider info on the brand you have been mulling over, such as the frequent RCD failures of rolec branded RCD's

I'm a big fan of Jordan/Cory and the Artisan Electrics YT channel. Lots of people disparage them as being "superior" or "patronising", but I think they are funny and informative.

Re: EV charger install pre-check 101 (with video) for dummies
Got to add in this screaming great dose of stupid.
Standby @60 watts per hour = 1440 watts over a 24 hour period = 525.6 kWh of wasted energy sending "happens or not" data packets for scrutiny under govt say so for wide scale analysis.
This if you recall was my concern based on a rolec product, not to pick on them, it merely serves to highlight that a prospective buyer needs to take into consideration the big waste of 24/7 vampire load.
SO, if this (example) of the rolec takes 2-3 minutes to reboot (if turned off) & send data packets via its grps connection then that is a mere 72 minutes over 24 hours, a massive improvement of fag packet math potential.
I don't know many (if any) here who in attempts to not waste energy would be happy with that level of yearly waste at the bottom of the drive, so please scrutnise any prospective "smart charger".
Comments welcome re time shifting cheap electric hours in relation to wasted energy compared to an off switch, an app alert to take it out of semi dumb mode & stream a packet of info at a sensible time rather than live 24/7.
On another unit (easee ev) "robot" I noted the standby is around 2 watts per hour, so it can be done.
(I did ask a few questions of the Nordic team which i'm waiting for info back, the flaw so far being no numbers for out of warranty units which may / may not be swapped out (such is the connection of wall & module) with no indication of cost therefore to work into a viable long term purchase.

Sorry to nit-pick but there is no such thing as a “Watt per hour” they are just “Watts”. One Watt is 1 Joule per second.Mr Gus wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 6:06 pm Got to add in this screaming great dose of stupid.

My understanding is that the Zappi is rated at 1W standby power.

Understood, it is contextual terminology for the layman (such as explaining to politicians who shift jobs every couple of years & maybe sign off work carried out by minions as their own for further promotion within the system) like saying coke is full of flavour / kfc is a blend of herbs n' spices cos that's context that's understandable by the general stream of public that you are swimming against , rather than the chemical soup that it really is. If they deign to pick up a phone, they'll cease to listen if they * think* you are drilling an equation into their ears.
Would you really expect grant shapps spods office to understand a more complex description of you put it any other way as 60 minutes in an hour, sixty watts over that hour, multiplied... etc etc !? ..especially if you wanted the olev office (or whatever) to self scrutinise an avoidable, wasteful problem within a govt sanctioned system?
Go down a pub & ask folk to explain 60 watt hours / then ask so to work out 0.06 of a kilowatt hour sense the confusion sitting too far from the norm.

Re: EV charger install pre-check 101 (with video) for dummies
The zappi is one of many olev grant approved applicable units. but is like comparing Apple's to oranges.
Does this mean that we should have lame ducks in the race to prove incompetence in terms of faux green design?
How much research will the layman do to establish efficiency bang for buck?
How many ev miles is that potentially (a more easily absorbed context) 1000 ?? or 500+ hours of supplemental heating for grandma in winter kinda thing? ..or sitting a 42 inch LCD tv in the front garden for the neighbours to watch? (based on average viewing hours per annum according to the energy sticker)
Grant money, best practise fail example.

Re: EV charger install pre-check 101 (with video) for dummies
Unfortunately Joe Public may not understand 0.06kWh but would accept 60Watt hours just as they would 60W/h - because they don’t really know the difference.
That could be because too many use dodgy units to try to befuddle them (not too difficult). Every time I have corrected sales people for bull excrement ‘explanations’ reminds me that sales people learn less and less about more and more - until they know nothing about everything (compared to an engineer who learns more and more about …. ).

Re: EV charger install pre-check 101 (with video) for dummies
Not in my experience, when in audio, the watts, ohms, & speaker sensitivity relating to kit, knackered or otherwise, tended to be beyond many I spoke too, & often deemed "boring" or condescending when clearing up the fog of confusion, thus simplified & filled with analogy. ..even when asked directly "what it's all about" ? & invariably, "but what hi fi said"...
Same as the widely held off angry belief that the volume dial really does go up to 10 (or 11)
Same in life with those hyena car salesmen who insisted all sorts of rubbish bar the ev's ability to fly
Same as leaving a proper technical based review on amazon / other forums, ..see where that gets you "TLDR" comment type shut downs.
(Too Long Didn't Read)
But hey.

No, it's not. It's just plain wrong. And meaningless.Understood, it is contextual terminology for the layman

Nice first post from pat., a warm welcome to you.
Please, go into Tesco & ask 50 random people to clarify that.
I'll do it properly when I get any govt personnel to pick up the phone next week, or do you want me to utilise the joule as a quoted unit to make for a more impressive number?
