Interesting thread..

makes you think bearing in mind most houses are filled with the stuff! (I hate plasterboard)
"Wayners" (a tradesman) points out that if enough space froma hollow void, an option is to stick it back in, which bearing in mind insulation calculations based on a layer of plasterboard is fairly rational thinking)
Love hardieboard as many will recall, my sun & saturation piece I left out on a roof for many years has finally "bit the dust" the daughter was 5 back then, it died when she was 16.

Re: Plasterboard disposal costs.
Our council tip says it is special waste because if it gets into ordinary landfill it degrades to hydrogen sulphide. Which is smelly, dense and poisonous if it accumulates in a depression, and burns to create sulphur dioxide if the gas is collected and flared.
Cutting it to pack internal partition wall cavities is a great idea. Soundproofing, additional thermal mass, re-use of material and reduction of waste: ticks lots of boxes for me.

Re: Plasterboard disposal costs.
Plasterboard is gypsum. Mostly Calcium sulphate. Dug up from the ground.
I suspect artex finishes are one reason for classifying as hazardous waste - an asbestos risk.
Clay soils might be improved with some gypsum addition.

correct, but from depths where it doesn't degrade anaerobically, apart from where it is shallow and dissolves causing sinkholes, like at RiponOliver90owner wrote: ↑Wed Aug 11, 2021 9:40 pm Plasterboard is gypsum. Mostly Calcium sulphate. Dug up from the ground.
probably not. What proportion of plasterboard do you think was Artexed?I suspect artex finishes are one reason for classifying as hazardous waste - an asbestos risk.
Correct. Would be a good idea for councils to promote that disposal route.Clay soils might be improved with some gypsum addition.

The sad thing about that linked thread, no-one said, fill the wall you wish to soundproof with proper, energy efficient insulation, because cutting up the board is likely to only infill a few inches if cut to fit & stacked.
