Not an "old forum" member

Heyo,

So I stumbled across this forum while researching a whole host of things we're planning for our 1970s semi refurb in the next few years.
ASHP install in April/May, UFH install Now-April, MVHR Summer 2022, draught sealing, cold-bridge insulation, and general upgrades in the mean time.

I'm not an "old forum" member, nor do I even know which old place is being referred to, but this one seems to have plenty of knowledgeable and keen individuals so I'm sure I'll survive!

I'll admit that the anti-spam sign-up question confused me for a little while as I was a very distant twinkle when Monty Python came about.

We've two dogs and two cats (the snoots), and a garden full of a selection of berry bushes and trees (the fruits).

I look forward to participating in future discussions

Welcome!

Sounds like you'll fit in!

Any solar in the plan?
12x 340W JA Solar panels (4.08kWp)
3x 380W JA Solar panels (1.14kWp)
6x 2.4kWh Pylontech batteries (14.4kWh)
LuxPower inverter/charger

(Artist formally known as ******, well it should be obvious enough to those for whom such things are important.)

No PV in the plan right now as financially I can't see it ever making sense, and environmentally I'd rather throw money at a larger generation scheme. I'm unconvinced by the environmental benefits of tiny solar installs (at least without any kind of energy storage) on residential properties.

Our house also isn't really ideal as we've got a relatively low pitch roof, facing East and West, with the South aspect mostly shaded by the next house up the hill.

I've been considering a singular wet solar to fulfil our summer hot water needs, but with a limited budget I think there are probably better places to be spending the money.

There's a possibility of a future extension with a non-shaded south facing pitch - if that happens I'll likely revisit all of the solar options available.

You know, some of us thought this new place would never be the same or even last long, but I now I truly believe your comment.

There are many lifetimes of experienced members on here who have worked in all sorts of industries. Even if you ask an off topic question in the "cafe" on almost anything, someone will probably answer it.

Welcome aboard.

PS - I'm sure we will convince you eventually on the Solar PV.
19.6kW PV > 114MWh generated
Ripple 6.6kW Wind + 4.5kW PV > 34MWh generated
7 Other RE Coop's
105kWh EV storage
90kWh Home battery storage
40kWh Thermal storage
GSHP + A2A HP's
Rain water use > 530 m3

Well , me , i nearly gave up .... (took me an hour or 2 to get it right)

Beside the fact that i am well "trained" with most of Monty Python s stuff , but mainly in German language , so was not too easy to figure out ...

I suppose , it would be better not to make it so tricky, for many people (off all age groups;) ) from all over the planet , if they would like to join for a serious reasons !

Anyway , Snootsandfruits / Robin , very welcome

Sounds like a electricity needing project .... sounds also good to have some PV ...

How is your garden? If your roof is shaded to the south could you have a shed/ground mount PV system?

So the roof isn't shaded to the South, but the gable wall mostly is, limiting the size of any possible wall mount systems.

We could have PV on the (mostly)East facing roof but it'd be non-ideal.

The current shed is slowly turning into soil and the roof is somewhat shaded by next door's garage (our plot is a couple of feet lower than theirs), but if we build an extension out to a similar location then the increased height plus increased roof pitch should make it a good option.

Right now we've not the money for the extension, let alone a roof of solar on top of it!

Once the renovation of the existing house is all done we'll reassess.

Hi Snootsandfruits,

Welcome,

Are you a keen grower of fruits or did you inherit the bushes and plants with the house ? I only ask because I would love to grow more fruit but my garden is exposed to westerly gales that are salt laden (coast is less than 3 miles away and 900ft below us) so it would be good to have a horticulturist (right term??) amongst the forum - anyone else already here filling those criteria - my apologies :)

I've managed to keep most of my plants alive over the years and would consider myself moderately keen, but I only sometimes know what I'm doing.
Most of the time I find myself googling things, or asking my mother who's got genuine horticultural qualifications.

The majority of the fruits are as you suspected inherited, although we have an apple tree that's moved house with us, and plans to add more berry bushes, especially as we had to remove some currants upon moving in as they're poisonous to dogs.

My knowledge sits more within technical fields (IT, programming, engineering etc.), or unicycles.
