I wonder if that's a lack of knowledge or a lack of compliant second-hand cars in the area. My 2008 Nissan Micra is apparently ULEZ compliant (though I never drive in London) so no need to buy a brand new car. Surely better to keep a clean, older car going than to have a new one manufactured?

I was thinking the same thing. In Abedeen they have made the ULEZ cut off the port road to non qualifying cars. This means the traditionally lower income Torry area folk now have a multi mile round the perimeter of the city run rather than a sub 1 mile route. Not great.

I'm absolutely not here for a fight, but we do need to define what "clean" is. Personally, I'd ditch any diesel that isn't EU 6 straight away (and in fact, I did ditch my emissions compliance test dodging EU 5 Tiguan).

Hmm, it's US-based so although the analysis seems sound, the figures are a bit different from the UK. 25mpg as 'typical' sounds shocking but that's US gallons so about 30mpg in imperial gallons -is that typical for a UK petrol car? I average over 65mpg but I do drive like a granny. As you say, very dependent on efficiency & miles travelled.

Of course it is is you have a very low income / disposable income and your old car (which you may of had for many years) is worth nothing in your area because it isn't compliant.
