I wonder how much better again the air quality would be if they did a similar exercise for the airports in and around London?

Hard to argue with the facts though if the air is cleaner and people are feeling the benefits.

Another interesting statistic would be the reduction in hospital attendance for respiratory diseases, I wonder why they didn’t cite that as a recorded metric?

Anecdote, back in 85 I was in London, the street pollution was so bad I had to go deep into a park (green park) for respite from it. Was in the city a few weeks ago and noticed a massive difference in air quality and also less noise pollution. Although I did hear a taxi driver shouting at an E cyclist.

Cyclists in London scare the proverbial out of me, I don't go to the "smoke" very often but every time I do I see tourists being robbed of their valuables by gangs on bikes and e bikes

Air quality wise, yeah its noticeable and the buildings that used to have to be routinely cleaned for smog based dirt are less frequent, all they need to do now is find out how to manage the pigeons, rats and foxes and it wont be a bad place to avoid for the crime (street based and behind the tills!)

As a dweller in the outskirts of London I have also definitely noticed a change in the air quality over the last few years - not least the smell of diesel. There have been several interventions in air pollution over that time such as the LEZ/ULEZ but also the widespread adoption of electric buses, and then the zero emissions mandate for the taxi fleet. Plus the huge increase in cycling.

Long way to go but yes it does show that policy drives change.

ULez scheme just opened near me, fully support this however I feel it’s the lower income families that will suffer.
One of the cleaners that we use, does a city centre job, had to give it up as they can’t afford a new car

I used to live in South London, right where the ULEZ zone now starts.
Back in the day, every horizontal outside surface was covered in diesel soot. Window sills, inside and out, were always covered. God knows what that did to people's health.
When EU 5 came in (limiting particulates) the amount of soot went down quite considerably. When I now visit everything is much much cleaner.
When you can see the pollution you realise just how bad it was and how regulations were needed to address that.

Former Brummie dweller myself, now Cornish north coast, and concur re the pollution being noted in the cities, was pretty horrific in the Digbeth area where i worked for a fair while, same soot you mention Simon and truly awful.

Been in Cornwall now for 13 years, and very strangely, notice exactly the same problem down here.
Find it really odd as we have next to no heavy industry down here at all, pretty much continous winds, regular sandblasting with heavy rains and the last person to breathe the same air as us is generally a Brazilian.

Yet despite this, all of the surfaces hear are grimey, houses render is particularly bad, our charcoal coloured driveblocks are embarrassing and the roof needs cleaning everyyear or two else it noticably changes colour. Same everywhere?

Can make head nor tail of it myself, unless some heathen has a permament tyre fire on the Scilly Isles im stumped.

That'll be because you live near the coast. You'll be getting salt laden winds and possibly sand blown at your house.

We live in a small town in north Shropshire and don't have any issue with dirt from pollution, nor did we in our previous house.

Unfortunately we can still smell the wood smoke from the morons round here who burn wood for no good reason.
