It cost me a solar panel a while back which was annoying but not as annoying as the monthly damage and destruction of the recycling and household waste bins as well as the litter strewn across the mountainside.
So recently I decided it was high time I built a more robust bin refuge, this needed to be in a location directly adjacent to the collection point so that the bins would still be available for collection once every three weeks for the household waste and weekly for the recycling boxes.
I decided on Gabion baskets to provide the necessary wind deflection and offer a strong anchor point, these would be filled from the copious waste slate and overburden tips that pepper the maintains around where I live so a little bit of upcycling of waste material potentially, and creating a habitat for insects, local sand lizards etc. The gabions were 1m x 0.8m x 0.3m two were set at 1m high and tied in at right angles to two set at 0.8m high the old fence line was then cut and will be tied in to the 0.8m basket ends to retain the fence exclusion for the wondering sheep and cattle.
