Best bang for your buck is going to be solar -fit and forget .........buts its a tad boring and mine shuts down at night....
Wind and water is addictively interesting .........
remember 42w continuous is 1 unit of electricity per day !!
Wind turbine wise i would go for anything by Rutland Marlec or Ampair because they are proven work horses.
Both are good on batteries and both can cheaply be grid tied using cheap chinese solar inverters -can help show how-been there done it but have no wind here....

I would add leading edge (LE) to that list as well they have a good reputation as far as I am aware Billy from the other place flew the LE 600 which performed well for him and I see lots of LE 300 alongside rail and road signs and at remote telemetry outstations

I have to admit to being tempted by the Chinese turnip linked to previously but not until I’ve snook some more mobile solar on to the patio areas

Looks like an AIR X or similar named copy. Wouldn't bother. I have an AIR 403 ? which was the for runner and it was very noisy and produced very little.

Power output = Swept Area x 0.625 x Wind speed cubed

So for the one linked to above, the blade length is 580mm, or 0.58m, so Swept area = π x 0.58² = 1.06m²

therefore for 10m/s of wind:

1.06 * 0.625 * 1000 = 660W

That's assuming it is well designed, well made, efficient, and well positioned.

If you get 100W out of that thing I'd be astonished!

Stinsy,

Is that blade length, or diameter? If blade length, the power would be four times that of the same diameter. Not checked your maths for efficiency, Betz, etc, but was just wondering…

Hugh Piggot does a nice little book on building DIY wind turbines that actually work, cause he actually knows what he is talking about.

Which wad it? Blade length or rotor diameter? Sorry if I didn’t differentiate, between them, clearly enough.

Andy from the other place built and ran one of Hughes designs didn’t he ?

Do any of these cheap turbines come with production Vs windspeed curves?

I'd be very wary of any claims of output without!
