Just as a followup I heard no more from the installer but on 3rd April I received an email from growatt (GB rep I think but from Chinese server AFAICS) to say they had done a firmware upgrade remotely on the 30th March.

Since then the sun has filled the battery several times and we have exported quite a few kWh with no errors or lockouts.

Does this mean that your system is always online and depends on the internet to work properly? My friend's Tesla battery can only be monitored via their website (which is sometimes very slow.)
I would prefer a system that is under my control within the house, assuming it will have to communicate via my wi-fi router or whatever.
(I am a bit pi££ed off that my Humax PVR hasn't been updated / wasn't future-proofed even though it is permanently on (standby) and never really switched off because I was told it needs to update itself overnight.)

I think it depends on being permanently online to be monitored and for updates but I'm not at all sure how it works. I originally had it on the guest network and switched that off but then the installer could not deal with problems so now I leave it online permanently. I'm not very happy to do this but, whilst the problems I had were when it was permanently online, at least a fix was provided.

Yes I would prefer to be able to keep it just on the local network and only upgrade when I allow it.

In the meanwhile despite drawing about 0.3kWh/day spuriously I am very happy with the battery-inverter, I just wish I had a little EV as most recent days we have exported 3-5kWh which would be about 100 miles of travel, probably all we do most weeks.
