TVs are one of Britain’s household biggest energy drain - with as many as 98 per cent of UK households leave their sets on standby at all times.

Natalia explained: "Many wrongly assume that turning off via the remote switches it off entirely – however this isn’t always the case.

"Leaving the TV plugged in and switched on uses 1.3kWh. As the average cost of electricity is now £0.28 per unit, this can add £132.86 a year to your bill.



Thats good to know. In winter leaving it on helps warm the house if it uses 1.3kWh on standby.



Meanwhile, kettles use around 0.3kWh when left plugged in, which adds up to £30.66 a year.

Considering we’re using a total of 3.5-4 KWh per day

Well it does bear repeating as folks don't seem to know about appliances power consumption despite it being pointed out time and time again over the years.

Not certain about some of the figures though - my kettle certainly doesn't use power just from being left plugged in, and the claim that " a typical games console uses 15kWh per hour" doesn't inspire confidence.

You’re right Marcus - as a nation we’ve been wasteful of ‘energy’.

In some ways, it’s been too easy and cheap (I’m not trying to be disrespectful to those struggling with energy bills) that, generally, we haven’t had to give too much thought to energy.

Be interesting to see if there is any sustained reduction in demand when the new prices start to bite.

Ive got to start using more power to heat the house.
Over time ive got a bit carried away with the amount of panels I have got on various systems.
The last few days the 24 volt battery system is charging up to 33 volts.

Should I go even more high tech with even more Arduino / Pic assembly language control systems.
Or should I keep it simple with an electric motor / hoist to drop a big sheet of wood over the panels if the volts go to high.

OK, so I worked those telly numbers backwards. Starting with £132.86 pa, and a leccy cost of 0.28p, that's 474.5kWh pa. Or 1.3kWh per day. So they are serious!

And 1.3kWh per day works out at 54W on standby (assuming the telly is never switched on).

Most (large) LED TV's use less than 100W when switched on, and I believe modern TV's and monitors only use one or two W's in standby. Not excusing any waste, but let's say 20hrs in standby at 2W equals £4 pa at 28p/kWh or 3% of what the 'Money Saving Expert' claimed.

As for the games console consuming 15kWh per day (excusing the per hour garbage) in standby ..... £4.20 per day .... £1,533 per year ..... oh FFS!

I'm pretty sure that the Sony TV I bought back in 2005 has a 0.3W standby consumption, you switch if off and about 20secs later there is an audible click when I presume it is in standby mode.

If your house single phase main supply fuse is rated at 60 Amps. Running a 15kWh heater ( Games Console on stand by ) would Blow it every day. )

I think the Energy supply company would get fed up coming out every day to replace the mains incoming fuse.

Simply ensuring it is turned off completely can save £4.20 each day,

This is obviously what they need -
