Help! HinkleyC and load following?

Any news worthy story. Good things to watch at the Cinema, Theatre, on TV or have you read a good book lately?

Help! HinkleyC and load following?

#1

Post by dan_b »

Quick appeal for help...
Most nuclear power stations don't load follow - apart from most of the ones in France because they have such a high % of nuclear generation.

I vaguely recall that the EPR design allows for Load Following.
But I also vaguely recall that Hinkley C won't be built/commissioned/operated with Load Following.
But I can't find any documentation to back up that vague recollection.

And I'm involved in a Twitter Spat with someone about it!

Anyone have any insights/links, or did I just make it up?

As I recall it was you that posted the contract documents 5+ yrs ago? I'll see if I kept a copy of the link.

But HPC could ramp down 60%, so not really load following, since costs would remain the same, just 60% less leccy, and for CfD purposes why would they generate less leccy.

Here you go:

For burnup rate < 80% (max speed to be
defined for higher BU)
No use of load-follow is forecast, technical
capability is described in the safety case for
information only.
This may be amended in later phases according
to potential National Grid requirements

My understanding is,
Depends what you mean about load following. Load following by the nuclear reactor not meaningfully possible in a timely manner. However electricity production following just means they waste the heat produced which has negligble marginal value and/or export the excess. Thats why the UK has Hydro.
