40 degrees next weekend, mid July ?

Any news worthy story. Good things to watch at the Cinema, Theatre, on TV or have you read a good book lately?

Ref “ I worked for years in Saudi Arabia. “

I also worked there for years.

I remember being told on a training course.

If you are involved in an accident while driving. It will be your fault.
If you were not in the country the accident would never have happened.

First time there was 1975 in July.
The old air-conditioned jet plane only had the exit at the rear.
I remember the Lady on leaving the aircraft saying.
“ It is hot outside. Take a deep breath and hold it inside when you walk out the door. “
At the time I thought why would she say that. Very strange.

Of cause I did not take a deep breath and nearly collapsed just outside the door. :o

Did listen on all other flights.

Same in Bahrain when I was there in the mid-1970's, it's always the fault of the European, no matter what the real cause was. They built a dual carriageway around Manama, then discovered that the rich kids were killing themselves with monotonous regularity, driving fast cars beyond their ability. First fix was to put the wrecked cars on top of poles by the road to remind them of the risk. Doesn't work in an In sha'Allah culture. Next move was to build roundabouts without any roads coming off, as their equivalent to speed bumps. That didn't work either, and not long before I left they were combining the wrecked cars on top of poles with the roundabouts, putting the poles in the middle of them to make them more obvious. Didn't seem to have much effect, Ferraris and Lamborghini's were still piling up most Fridays.

I notice that the met office rainfall radar page only shows temperatures hourly. Maybe it's always like that (I don't generally look at it) as rainfall is still shown at 5-min intervals.
34 max here in a shady flower-bedthis afternoon, dropping to 33 by 6pm. Plus radiant heat off south-facing wall and sun made it like stepping out into a furnace! Back indoors at 25 felt lovely and cool...

Did you ever see the Ramco Corp sponsored drawing of a still for middle east postings? Loved that!

Used to go on visa runs from Saudi to Bahrain. Plenty nutter drivers there to this day. Didn't like the whole middle east tbh. Some very nice individuals but the culture as a whole didn't gel with me. The call in for takeaway hooker thing they had going in some of the hotels made me want to puke. I still wonder to this day what those Indonesian lassies thought their job was going to be before they landed. Domestic likely enough... :x

Going camping with DS1 this weekend. Plan has always been to get on with the A2A HP project when I get back. But now I’m worried they’ll be sold out everywhere…
12x 340W JA Solar panels (4.08kWp)
3x 380W JA Solar panels (1.14kWp)
5x 2.4kWh Pylontech batteries (12kWh)
LuxPower inverter/charger

(Artist formally known as ******, well it should be obvious enough to those for whom such things are important.)

At last (some) people are paying attention and improvising. I definitely understand the value of preventing the sun getting inside a glass window, rather than seal the heat behind curtains, as on one holiday to the Canary Islands we were given a room which stank of burning. It was so bad that I thought there must have been a fire or something, and luckily we got a room change. It only occurred to me later in the week that it might just have been the rubber/plastic-coated white light-tight curtain lining which had got toasted by enclosing a small air gap!

Something similar happened to 2 nested clear corrugated Novolux sheets which got left out in the sun here once. The thin air gap almost incinerated them, they went white and got horribly distorted.

I thought very hard before stating this thread not wanting to be a scaremonger and I have seen 40 degrees threatened (in the UK) on weather forums before but this time the chatter was somehow different, less sensational and more about real concern and worry with multiple weather model convergence.

Several years ago several senior forecasters dismissed the idea of 40 degrees in the UK as complete nonsense, even with climate change and said 40 would not be achievable until around the year 2080.

Well boys and girls, its happened, albeit a couple of days later, and maybe 41 or even 42 might happen in the next 3 hours. :?

Hopefully this may help to get the message across that AGW is a real thing and that the science behind the climate models is sound and not something made up. The problem is that people have short memories and this hot spell will be forgotten quickly as soon as the weather changes later in the week.

On the topic of reflecting heat out of the house, I can positively affirm that putting heat reflective material inside double glazed windows can result in serious damage and a risk of injury. I did this at our old house a few years ago, stuck some aluminium foil to bits of cardboard and propped them up in two west-facing windows. One of the glazing units literally exploded, with the inner pane blowing into the living room. Thankfully there was a sofa in the way that caught most of the glass, but it went off with a hell of a bang. We were finding shards of glass for months afterwards, as being low level the window was toughened glass.

The advice I was given by the chap that fitted the replacement glazing unit was to never, ever put anything heat reflective close to the inside of double glazing. The problem (as explained to me - sounds logical) is that there is an IR reflective coating on the inside of the outer pane of glass, that is intended to reflect heat back into the house (the "low E coating"). If something heat reflective is fitted inside, then IR gets in, gets reflected outwards by the added heat reflective layer, then hits the IR reflective coating and bounces back inwards, only to be reflected back out again. The result is a rapid build up of temperature on the inside pane of glass and that can then cause it to shatter, as happened with ours. It is OK to put a heat reflective layer outside the windows, though.

It seems that my bodge job reflective outdoor blind affair, combined with the two cream awnings I fitted last week, and the trick of getting the underfloor heating to run in reverse with cold water from the heat pump, works exceptionally well. Highest temperature we saw today was 21.4°C indoors, outside was just under 35°C by around 14:30. What was amazing was when I pointed the IR thermometer at the paved drive, that was sitting at 62°C just after lunchtime. Heck of a contrast with the ground floor tiles, they were at 17.9°C. I've actually had cold feet this afternoon sat here at my desk!

A 1.5 degree increase in the record set just 3 years ago is scary indeed, will the politicians take any note of it?? nahh it has barely been mentioned in the tory deadbeat parade, tax cuts galore............ saving the planet??
