Evaporative air cooler

#1

Post by Joeboy »

Out for dinner tonight and we were the beneficiaries of these excellent evaporative water air coolers. Seen em for years over here but the craick with you guys tipped me over the edge. Bought the mini version for the lower balcony outdoors. Told they cost 1tl(5p) per day to run.

I can say they are crazy effective where I've sat. £190 delivered to village. If its all I expect I'll maybe carry back home on a 1 way book.

Mate, that's exactly what I am in. 40+ degrees and sticky, these units are excellent!
As I have standard air con across the home here and this is an additional that may be effective in outdoor balcony as well as indoor I will be back with further updates next week. :D

That's interesting, maybe the extra airspeed helps?

The units I have been beside are the full size(single fridge). They will easily cool a dozen people. The one I have bought is 2 sizes down, not sure of the air volume it will move. Stood up tonight during dinner and walked outside the bubble I was in created by the unit and I though woah, how hot! 🤔 Worth a punt so I did and worth seeing how it performs in the home. The reviews on them are excellent although you lose the moisture extraction and need to vent home. I think they might just have a non invasive portable place for that 6 week Scottish Summer...

Edit- a quick check found below 40% humidity is best and not much use above 60%. I will check ours tomorrow but certainly felt clammy a few times this last fortnight!

I nearly bought one of these a few weeks back but saw very mixed reviews, mostly negative so I went for the full monty split aircon. :D

Not suggesting that they are on par with a split unit and it's added extras (heat pump and dehumidifier) but after being around them for years here and feeling the benefits they are defo a big step up from just a fan! Fingers crossed we feel a similar benefit in the smaller unit, especially on the lower balcony. :D

Apparently ice blocks isn't the way to go in these things as the water needs to warm for the evaporative effects to kick in. 🙄 I like the 100W running cost!

In saying that, of course I will test the ice blocks theory too. :)

Also quite like the other name for them, 'Swamp coolers'. 8-)

Had a check this morning and we are at 58% humidity here. When it's effectiveness would drop off beyond that in feel I don't know although 60% is the figure i read last night. Good point and I'll keep it in mind for when we are out in Oct again and report back.

Until Monday rolls around along with the evaporative unit this floorstanding WT1 imitator will have to do. SWMBO approves!
