Major Winter kettle upgrade! 5 ltr 2nd hand...A tenner.

My arithmetic may have been a tad off at the start so i'll just say hundreds of kWh's electric saved per Winter and possibly 1MWh, Looks cool too.

A single ~250ml mug of cold water uses less than 0.035kWh of energy to bring it to boiling point in my small 1kW electric kettle. Clearly considerably more, if using a microwave.

It is often boiled using solar or some solar energy. To ‘save a MWh’, you must use a kettle a great deal. Perhaps your justification with details of the calculations might persuade me to believe your savings over a winter period - even if you live close to the arctic circle.

1.8 litre Kettle into 1.8 litre thermos (foraged from cleaning up a festival) is how we were coerced into operating.
6 litre kettle is a lot of air space partially filled.
Hope you meant 0.6 litre enough for 2 cuppa's ?

Mr Gus, Huge amounts of tea, cooking every day, cleaning and i might even stretch to a hot water bottle. It all adds up. The kettle will remain full most of the time and be a ready source to use , none of which will be run through copper pipes so little to no losses. This shall become a challenge for swmbo & I in the ways we can find to use it. It's in our nature to do this, we like power shifting. I will have a look at Sigg flasks, good to know, thanks.

The big kettle should be great for things other than tea-making! If you want to wash the pots by hand, or to wash the car, for example.

Absolutely and yes we should have. It's early days and we may yet go in that direction. At the moment we are just enjoying the learning curve.

A dreich couple of days testing the balance of efficiency alongside very meager solar input. Seeing only 8kWh or so coming in across both systems. Solariboost has been silent and we are now onto gas until Ripple WT kicks in.

The woodstove is kicking out enough heat to raise the entire house to a min of 19.5 deg and about 22 deg in its own main room/space. Finding the balance of running it on low so to speak and not overheating the space or emitting smoke/smell externally. Cooking a small handful of apple windfalls from our veg patch 2 to go into an apple,pineapple and coconut cake tomorrow.

The big kettle is working well and due to volume held is used all the time and doesn't go crazy in between.

Defo in a better place this year than last for going to grid. I wonder if there is a unit I can find to cook a cake within on the woodstove? Gotta prep for Winter!

I would imagine that putting your cake tin into a pre-heated cast iron casserole pot on top of your wood stove would work out ok

There are some Dutch Oven types that Bread makers use. Sort of an oval flat base and a domed top. Sure if it was big enough, you could get a cake tin inside.

Plus you could bake bread.

Have a look at the link, nothing special needed, just a pot and some greaseproof paper. Glass topped pot so watching it cook as I type. This IS epic!
