Interesting coincidence, but over supper tonight my wife mentioned that she'd not used the big oven at all for three weeks. Since getting the small Sage oven/grill/air fryer/toaster/slow cooker it's been used for pretty much everything. Did a smashing slow cooked beef casserole a couple of days ago.

The gas disconnection aim is pretty much a carrot that I have held in front of myself over the last few years.

The reasons are multiple.

The pollution caused during the pursuit and capture of gas.
The pollution caused during the use of gas.
The whole Tom & Barbara aspect of being off gas (unless it is a bio digester in my own cellar).
The control aspect by our domestic power companies and politicians.

The above points have been in my mind for years.

Finally and long suspected, manifested this year in spectacularly horrifc fashion. The prick Putin. Weaponised gas.

Just got my bill from Octopus:


OUCH! That standing charge!

My gas SC is 15.09p per day, ok not a huge amount, £55 per year. Yet that £55 strangely becomes precisely 1MWh of power when bought at my current Go Faster rate which is a little over 80 days of heating the water tank across Winter Suddenly it doesn't look so insignificant.

Regardless of the arithmetic it won't fly unless SWMBO makes it her own. So we'll see how this Winter goes. Personally, I'd have it cut off tomorrow but that's not team thinking! My life is good at the moment, no need to unleash hell!

As much as I'd like to bin off gas, it isn't a realistic proposition for me for several reasons.

1) We have a massive 250L bath that isn't used very frequently, but when the Mrs does decide to have a bath it is at short notice. So the "on demand" nature of the combi is perfect, whereas a big HWC leaking heat all year would be wasteful.

2) Our rads are all piped in microbore so retrofitting a HP isn't possible on the CH circuit.

I have many gas-minimisation plans but that makes the standing charge hurt even more!

Today has been prepping tatties for the evening meal, made a apple & coconut sponge. Its cooking away in the air fryer. The apples and tatties are our own. EV is charging as we are away to the coast today for lunch at a mates cafe.
Howked out the last of the tatties to dry, about 15kgs.

No brag but it hit me that this is the way to live. No touch of grid in late Sept, quite a joy

Nowt wrong with that. If I had the weather I would! The cake is marvellous. Airfryer cooked plus apples and coconut make for an incredibly moist cake.
