I suspect that she was selected as leader because she was thought to be easy to influence. I would imagine that most of those in the party that have strong business interests (and that will include the energy companies) felt that they would be able to get her to do their bidding more easily than Rishi Sunak.

The current situation (which could change before this post appears in this thread . . .) seems chaotic. I'd assumed that Jeremy Hunt would stand, but he's said he's not. I'd never in a million years thought the Boris Johnson would stand again, yet it seems he is. It seems that we are back to the situation that has plagued British (and US) politics for years, in that all the choices are poor, so it's a matter of choosing the least worst option.

Shouldn't that be a lettuce? I gather the general consensus is that the live streamed lettuce lasted longer than Liz Truss.

Official confirmation that the lettuce did indeed win:

Last Friday, the Daily Star newspaper set up a live feed showing a wig-wearing lettuce next to a photo of Liz Truss, asking readers whether the vegetable or the prime minister would last longer.

It emerges the iceberg lettuce has won.

More than 12,000 Twitter users were watching the feed ahead of Liz Truss's speech - viewer numbers then quickly shot up to 21,000 as she announced she was resigning.

The lettuce is now surrounded by other vegetables with googly eyes and several discarded bottles of gin and champagne. Disco music and strobe lights complete the scene.

The frame carrying Truss's photo has been flipped down.

I genuinely think Truss was a shill for the FF industry.

I doubt you're alone. The choice for the party probably comes down to Rishi Sunak or Penny Mordaunt though, I suspect. They'd be mad to put Boris Johnson back and risk more of the inevitable lying and ignoring the law that would be bound to happen.

My money is on Rishi Sunak. I think the party will view him as a safe pair of hands as far as the economy is concerned, plus he has the advantage that his economic policies would most probably be seen as positive by those outside the UK, so he'd probably help restore a bit of international confidence in the UK.

My gut feeling is that we can't be far away from a GE. I live in a staunchly Tory area, and even here there are mutterings that Labour would do a better job. The most probable path to an early GE would be a vote of no confidence in the government, and there may well be just enough chaos and disillusion within the parliamentary Conservative party to allow that to happen.

Boris will struggle to get 100 nominations to qualify, probably why the 1922 set the bar so high, they know if he had a second bite at the cherry it would precipitate the same chaos as it did in the summer.

As a country we desperately need PR to stop this ideological madness and to truly represent at least most of us. Starmer and his mob don't seem to get it though and they seem wed to the neolib economic agenda almost as badly as the tories.

Sadly the Pro-Boris MP & PR brigade demanding clearing of the way for "the second coming of the rampant shagger, ..of women & country" were on BBC R4, challenging the presenter as to "what did boris actually do wrong" ..thankfully presenter is not a complete dick, unlike said brown nose MP who was cut down & reminded that it wasnt the media making stuff up it was fact, & the demands of his own party that toppled him.


I hated the bandied around demeaning term of gammon where brexit was concerned, but should the twot come back mere weeks after being found nseated then we are dropped right into the "deserve what you get" scenario akin to dictators sons getting back into power in the Philippines. ..making me re-evaluate that terms application to type.

There was a horrible smell of "fake media" Trumpian play-book on the radio from the Pro-(Bo)Jo stooge being set loose till the Today presenter chased it away with fact.
