I like the sound of a sub-board of collected knowledge - as a complete newcomer to Home Assistant.
That GitHub page looks good for the inverter control.
Is there any power connection on any of the RS485 pins? I don't have any power sockets in the loft - trying to work out how to get a 5V supply. Presumably the RS232 socket which powers the sunsynk wifi dongle has power built in

Power is a bit of a PITA I found. I added a small 5V power supply module inside the case of the ESP8266 unit, as there wasn't an easy to access power supply from the Sofar inverter. One thing I'd like to try and find out is the pinout for the DB9 connector that the WiFi logger stick uses. I'm pretty sure that connector is just RS485 together with a 5V power supply, but haven't been able to confirm this or find the pinout. Several inverters seems to use an optional plug in WiFi stick, so there seems to be a fair chance that many have power as well as data available.

I tend to prefer wired to WiFi and so use poe for the power.
