Europe's largest grid-scale battery energised
Europe's largest grid-scale battery energised
The 98MW / 196MWh project is currently the largest in Europe to date by MWh. It's at Pillswood, Hull, adjacent to National Grid's Creyke Beck substation which is the main grid connection connection point for Phases A and B of the Dogger Bank Offshore wind farms.

How much did it cost?
Re: Europe's largest grid-scale battery energised
Timelapse construction of it.
18.7kW PV > 109MWh generated
Ripple 6.6kW Wind + 4.5kW PV > 27MWh generated
6 Other RE Coop's
105kWh EV storage
60kWh Home battery storage
40kWh Thermal storage
GSHP + A2A HP's
Rain water use > 520 m3
Ripple 6.6kW Wind + 4.5kW PV > 27MWh generated
6 Other RE Coop's
105kWh EV storage
60kWh Home battery storage
40kWh Thermal storage
GSHP + A2A HP's
Rain water use > 520 m3
Re: Europe's largest grid-scale battery energised
I can't find actual info but I do know that back in 2020 the cost was about £0.5m per MWp output based on another project I know about.
Most seem to be based on a 2 hr output so the MWh's capacity seems to be double the max power output.
So I guess £50 million 'ish.

Re: Europe's largest grid-scale battery energised
Probably best leaving the economics to the market, but seeing as how most BEV battery factories seem to use 30GWh as their blueprint, it occurred to me, that just one of those could provide the UK's intraday storage if focused on (just as an example) LFP stationary batts.
So, I wonder how much buying/building one of those would cost the Gov?
[In reality, this would probably ock up the free market economics, but just a ponder.]

Re: Europe's largest grid-scale battery energised
Seems quite expensive
UK load 2021 was 259,558 GWh, 711.11GWh daily average. Max load 47.1 GW, min load is what like 2 GW?
Your are talking magnitudes away without it actually being proven. (VBB discharge issues, fire, no known cause. Moss landing; coolant leak).

In the last 12 months max load 47.1GW (Dec 21) and min load 17.4GW (Aug 22).

Re: Europe's largest grid-scale battery energised
I'm guessing this was more costly than normal due to groundworks to lift everything to protect from flooding.
85no 58mm solar thermal tubes, 28.5Kw PV, 3x Sunny Island 5048, 2795 Ah (135kWh) (c20) Rolls batteries 48v, 8kWh Growatt storage, 22 x US3000C Pylontech, Sofar ME3000's, Brosley wood burner and 250lt DHW

Re: Europe's largest grid-scale battery energised
Costs a lot, reducing flood risk damage. I had to build our house about 1.5m higher than I wanted to because of the flood risk assessment. At a guess it increased our groundworks bill by around 15%.
25 off 250W Perlight solar panels, installed 2014, with a 6kW PowerOne inverter, about 6,000kWh/year generated
6 off Pylontech US3000C batteries, with a Sofar ME3000SP inverter

Sorry Nowty, don't know why I didn't think to point you to the Megapack pricing site (brain fog perhaps), anyway it comes in at around $103m for the 196MWh 2hr 98MW variants, would be about $95m for the 4hr models, but of course half the power. [Edit - Just to be clear those are estimates, in fact they are the prices for a California install. Hopefully like the 'Big Aussie Batts', this will pay for itself very quickly as it also provides balancing services.
