January?
Re: January?
I remember believing wholeheartedly that "solar and spaceheating don't go together". However here I am with my modest solar array powering my house baseload, dehumidifier, and monster A2A HP.
IN JANUARY!
IN JANUARY!

Re: January?
That is epic, a true milestone. Can I ask how much load the a2a hp pulls and what sort of heat output do you get for that load?

Re: January?
My A2A had "7kW" in big writing on the box but the spec sheet says 6.6kW. That is the amount of heat output.
At full chat it pulls c. 1.7kW but quickly settles down to about 650W

Re: January?
How often do we have a run of cold clear days like this in the winter?
My new panels are putting 3kWh into the battery by noon and then the original array start generating over 1.5kW.
Battery full by 1500 and immersion satisfied.
Two days with no grid import which is a first since late October so the extra array is well worthwhile despite it shading the original array significantly before 12:00
I now have the Willis heater but will wait for warmer weather to fit it and that should give me a more full tank of DHW but as predicted the new array will be curtailed for much of the summer unless I have a new load for it.
I have noticed a chap down the road with a Zoe who may want some free electricity but I have not got a EV charger yet.

Re: January?
Last winter was rubbish I got 44kWh in the whole of December. This winter has been much better.openspaceman wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 12:35 pm How often do we have a run of cold clear days like this in the winter?
Right now there is lying snow and not a cloud in the sky, I might scrape 10kWh today which would be an astonishing achievement and will mean no gas and no peak electric. Which frankly is the goal every day but seldom achieved in December/January...

Re: January?
That is truly astonishing, 650W in 6.6kW heat out. I really am going to have to seriously consider one for the house.Stinsy wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 12:17 pmMy A2A had "7kW" in big writing on the box but the spec sheet says 6.6kW. That is the amount of heat output.

Re: January?
You not having a COP of 10 !, It would have to be going at full power as Stinsey mentioned 1.7kW and the badged 6.6kW is unlikely to be achievable in these outdoor cold temps, but maybe around 5kW is. I cannot imagine a COP of above 3 for an ASHP in these cold temps, but still excellent though.
I'm currently running both my GSHP and my downstairs A2A heatpumps.
My GSHP is badged at 8kW but my measurement of it when I commissioned it was 6kW.
I recon my A2A is currently chucking out at least 2kW.
And solar is still running it all and the rest of the house with some surplus still going into the battery.

Re: January?
I considered them but their efficiencies are just not up there with the split units and they are noisier and bulky units to have inside. They do however offer a pukka DIY solution without the FGAS issues as they are monoblocks with everything sealed.Joeboy wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 1:53 pm As a very small aside, this popped up in a search.

Re: January?
One can hope! I really enjoyed the inverter unit in Turkey this time. That was the first time I'd really used it as a heater and couldn't believe how cold the air was blasting out of the outdoor unit. Glad to read you've got it all going on this early, I've got a while to go but enjoying the incremental progress.nowty wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 1:54 pmYou not having a COP of 10 !, It would have to be going at full power as Stinsey mentioned 1.7kW and the badged 6.6kW is unlikely to be achievable in these outdoor cold temps, but maybe around 5kW is.
