The unavoidable problem with any of these things is that they are so loud.

No idea about the electric version, however the usaf osprey boeing flies near us & over us, it has a unique forward flight percussive soundwave signature that dominates the environment as it passes through countryside at around 3000 ft, singularly.

No idea how a large e version would "beat the air" as we only have that munter as point of reference.

As is, a big commercial jet at 27- 32000 is pretty noisy & frequent round here, (dhl to vienna a noticeable pain) military jet practice strafing run flights have declined & the areas commercial overhead c.a.a was given the go ahead sneakily to increase without properly informing locals how much reach the sound would impact, we have become an aero motorway.

US Marines call the Ospreys “flying coffins”. The safety record is less than great.

(Artist formally known as ******, well it should be obvious enough to those for whom such things are important.)

The entire value proposition of e VTOL is being able to VTOL near things - but they are still loud so noone would permit that. Once your in flight it's not really a problem.

If you've ever worked near a heliport or a low rise building with a pad you know how ridiculous it would be if it was frequent taxi-like availability.

We can hardly call you unproductive after seeing all the subterranean and other work you did at Nowty Towers.

  • Very close to my day job, so I'm probably going to have to watch this.
  • Noise isn't as much of an issue as you'd think, depending on the design - they're typically less offensive than helicopters due to a lack of main/tail rotor interaction. Joby is pretty much the reference design at the moment, and they're 65 dBA @ 100m during take-off. That's 20-30 dBA less than the equivalent helicopter.
  • Osprey isn't nearly as dangerous as it's reputation would suggest - they had a handful of high-profile failures early on, but they're absolutely fine now. The selection of the V-280 for FLRAA simply wouldn't have happened if the safety record was as bad as it's cracked up to be.
