Back on topic,
Plans for wind turbines and solar farm set for go-ahead although very small beer and vertical axis turbines ?, I thought they were a waste of time.
https://cwherald.com/news/plans-for-win ... -go-ahead/
"Five large wind turbines and 4,200 solar panels look set to get the go-ahead for a site off the westbound A66 on the outskirts of Penrith. It involves five 20kw vertical axis turbines, each measuring 47ft, and 4,200 ground mounted solar panels."

Re: solar on windfarms?
Speaks volumes
Might have a curry myself. Smashing weather.
We make 10kw solar 13kw wind, some bread and lots of beer.
We grow & cook loads.
We eat Fibre, Fat & no Fecking barcodes.
We swear at the heat pump (not strictly true)

Re: solar on windfarms?
I didn't think the vertical turbines were any good.. Are they making a come back.. Reengineered?nowty wrote: ↑Sun Jun 11, 2023 4:01 pm Back on topic,

Cheers for the pm. All good.

Re: solar on windfarms?
No worries, I suspect there may be some increase in the "on site" wind generation category soon.Windbag wrote: ↑Sun Jun 11, 2023 4:40 pmI didn't think the vertical turbines were any good.. Are they making a come back.. Reengineered?nowty wrote: ↑Sun Jun 11, 2023 4:01 pm Back on topic,

Re: solar on windfarms?
VAWTs have always been, and will continue to be, rubbish. The physics hasn't changed.

Re: solar on windfarms?
+1
But as a trickle back up system they might have some sort of application that "ultimately"** works . .but for mass adoption for grid energy reliance, nope.
(As was pointed out a while ago to myself, unless you have read a dedicated book on the myriad of designs out there, you will get duped on the basis that it is a "new" design ...precisely how the snake oil investment & occasional implementation works.
Take a look at a london tower block with massive wind turbine built in..as a costly, non working folly that took planning, investors et al in & rinsed them.
Where's the architect of that design portfolio!?
(would love to see their cv gloss over that)

**like a naff tricklecharger but it's still a brown trousers will it won't it every time you need to rely on it.

Re: solar on windfarms?
The thing is, VAWTs always end up being marketed/touted as a "small domestic turbine" solution - which as we know makes them even worse due to turbulent air flow.

Re: solar on windfarms?
Absolutely agree and I've got one! Puts out enough power to run one 12V led striplight.
I wish the reality was different.
I must say that even knowing this I like seeing it spin. Next time I'll invest in a coloured pinwheel.

Re: solar on windfarms?
My daughter had a led pattern changing battery powered enclosed spinning globe toy as a little kid, if they did that they'd be excusable as "entertainment value" on a windy night ...I might buy one then, as you say joe, the joy is seeing it spin (ditto the novelty garden propellor driven weather vane)
