Solar farm on trash
Re: Solar farm on trash
I did think of you the other day re being fanged & it turning bad Mart, there was a newly "discovered" via cat mouth saliva bite germ (twas in the papers) same sort of balloon hand like you if I recall correctly.

The effect from all that guano is how much lost Mart, have you ever asked them, pointless rooftop build if they don't take anti gull measures on the flying tip rats.

Re: Solar farm on trash
I'm surprised at how many gulls there are now, given that the tip shouldn't be as interesting. I need to take a load of mixed bits and pieces there to clear the garage, so will see how the roof looks, and take a few pics if possible. The long green 'bar' is the roof over the raised public drop off site, where you park cars, then have a choice of about 20 different bins (lorry containers) for metals, plastics, wood etc etc, and that faces the flatter roof with all the guano.
Yep, you are right about the cat saliva, it's actually what causes most of the allergies (not the fur as most folk think). One family adopted a cat, having got super excited, but after only one day, they had to reurn it, as their daughter was actually admitted to hospital due to an extreme adverse reaction, just from fussing it. They were heartbroken, as they'd already fallen in love with the cat (having picked it a few days earlier), and they also donated a huge amount of beds, toys, food etc that they'd bought ready.
Maybe the recycling centre should build a cat ladder onto the roof, and let the ferals and gulls 'sort it out' between them?

Re: Solar farm on trash
Worth suggesting to them mart but maybe not use the term "cat ladder" it may confuse them, cat access yes (in form of a walkway) & see what happens, it may be too much for poor pusses feral or not, so likely the thought of massive vet bills enough to nix that, then, if successful the necessary disposal of all those roof bound carcasses with the possibility of being blown (severed wings as sails) onto the public below

Re: Solar farm on trash
A question - given all these landfill sites off-gas methane - is any attempt made to actually capture it and burn it for energy generation ,or pump it into the national gas grid? Methane's actually a worse GHG than CO2. Might as well use it for something.

Re: Solar farm on trash
When (if) I go, I'll try to take a pic of the 3 big 'thingies' that they have, which I'm sure are to do with methane. They look a bit like giant generators, but could of course have nothing to do with methane. But perhaps just cook it off, I really don't know.

Re: Solar farm on trash
Can only speak about the past there Dan, but the ones near me were never intended for capture & re-purposing, merely to burn off build up (call it "safety" measures or whatever) ..the tree's & terrain around what was once in plain line of sight from the road above has now grown considerably & housing (flats) slap bang next door, so...

Re: Solar farm on trash
We walk our dogs past Cilgwyn quite often, its been closed ever since we lived here and even though there are some houses adjacent that take their potable water from private wells we have never heard of any issues with leachate contamination and whenever we walk past the generator is always humming quietly away to itself churning out electricity from the harvested methane. Its a far cry from my childhood where several landfills in Yorkshire were found to be oozing toxic sludge and had to be quickly closed and remedial engineering applied to them.
