UK Wind Record
Re: UK Wind Record
I guess with the Grid as it is they can't turn off much more synchronous generation - they're all pretty low.
Slightly surprised that Octopus hasn't got some "use more energy now" incentive going on to allow more wind on the grid?

Re: UK Wind Record
Maybe the wind generation is north of the grid capacity constraint and there's no point increasing demand south of the pinch point as it would put demand on gas?
2.0 kW/4.62 MWh pa in Ripples, 4.5 kWp W-facing pv, 9.5 kWh batt

(nowtyrecord for searching)
New provisional wind generation record today announced by national grid.

Re: UK Wind Record
I'm sure us up North would do our best to help out by using more wind generated power.AE-NMidlands wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2023 1:31 pmMaybe the wind generation is north of the grid capacity constraint and there's no point increasing demand south of the pinch point as it would put demand on gas?

Re: UK Wind Record
Octopus do have some kind of postcode-related discount scheme - https://octopus.energy/power-ups/ but only for customers in a few targetted places!
I am surprised that they are only in S E England though.

Re: UK Wind Record
Apparently the record was broken between 8:00 and 8:30 this morning and I missed it as I was still in bed.

Re: UK Wind Record
Just wondering if we are approaching another record today as IamKate is showing wind at 21.48GW with energy at -£29.56/MWh, emissions 37g/kWh.
Shame they can't shut down Biomass to cut pollution further. Or is that treated as zero for emission purposes?

Re: UK Wind Record
It’s possible, we are close to it and there is enough wind resource for another record but it’s a low demand day.Adokforme wrote: ↑Sun Dec 24, 2023 10:55 am Just wondering if we are approaching another record today as IamKate is showing wind at 21.48GW with energy at -£29.56/MWh, emissions 37g/kWh.

Biomass is actually running at a very low output today, the lowest I have seen for ages.
Wind generation actual verses forecast, on this scale a record for metered wind would be around 17.5GW.

Re: UK Wind Record
Thanks for that Nowty, impressed with all the graphs you manage to conjure up for us. Some of them I actually understand.
Checking out Robin Hawkes Renewables map it would appear that both Moray East and Beatrice wind farms are being curtailed to about 50%. I'm assuming this as the wind is stronger up there than anywhere else! I guess it's just a problem transmitting it further south when so much wind energy is available there too!
If they were both at 100% then another 0.9 GW or so would be on offer!
