Octopus saving sessions coming 1st Nov
Re: Octopus saving sessions coming 1st Nov
I too have managed an early-evening cheapslot today.
Am I right that every kWh I use is 0.1kWh added to my baseline?

Re: Octopus saving sessions coming 1st Nov
Yep. , but of course you have to guess the actual future saving session slot, although most seem to be 5pm till 6pm. So 4pm till 5pm I am partial boosting, whacking it up to the max 5pm till 6pm, then partial from 6pm till 7pm.
Whatever you use divided by 10 for a working day as the baseline is the average of the last 10 working days.
The non working days are a bit more complicated as it uses the last 4 non working days, but then takes the average of the two days which are the middle two if ranked from lowest to highest. And as less chance of a saving session on a non working day because of less demand, better to concentrate on the working days.
I also think 2nd Jan will count as a working day as the banks are open in London (its in the rules), so the extra bank holiday in Scotland won't count as a non working day.

Re: Octopus saving sessions coming 1st Nov
I’m switching everything to 5-7pm, on weekdays where I can, at the moment although annoyingly the Tesla stops charging for no reason.
It does this more at 5-7pm than any other time slot…..
No idea why

Re: Octopus saving sessions coming 1st Nov
1) Because its peak period, so if the car can be charged up without the peak slot it will, even though its shown in the schedule. Thats the way the Octopus earns extra income on grid balancing services.
2) .... or you've turned the charge rate up after getting the slot ? I turn mine up to boost the baseline but only a bit as less likely for Octopus to stop it.

Re: Octopus saving sessions coming 1st Nov
I tweaked it up slightly but only 2-3 amps and it hasn’t charged since 6pm. It’s done this before and not charged at all in 12 hours. Don’t need the miles so not an issue but it is puzzling.nowty wrote: ↑Fri Dec 29, 2023 7:25 pm1) Because its peak period, so if the car can be charged up without the peak slot it will, even though its shown in the schedule. Sometimes if I unplug and plug back in it sorts itself out, but not tonight. I’ve even refreshed at a lower soc, got a new schedule and still no charging.
Edit : didn’t charge in 14 hours of a schedule. Unplugged and plugged back in, schedule received and charging normally now. Car was at 35% SoC when plugged in, it charged a couple of time for 5 mins and then seemingly went to sleep for the rest of the schedule

Re: Octopus saving sessions coming 1st Nov
So, as part of all my thinking I'm reprogramming my stack at the moment to cover Octopus savings sessions. Its a shame it can't be automated through the api.
I don't have enough battery to get me through the expensive period (currently E7 but hopefully intelligent GO soon). So if I cover the expensive period as much as possible with the battery then I will typically run out of battery at about 17:00 or later if sunny. Perversely the savings rules incentivise me to ensure that I shift the periods I cover with the battery outside of the period 16:00 to 19:00. Ie I will be using grid electricity during the period that really I should be aiming not to. It's a bit of a perverse scenario and a shame that those who permanently ensure they cover that period with batteries are rewarded. I suppose you could say we are by the fact we get 7.5p over night.

Re: Octopus saving sessions coming 1st Nov
Problem I have is that the kids' after-school sporting commitments tend to mean I'm out of the house 1630-1930 on a weekday so me and the car aren't home to do a rinse at off-peak prices...
Yesterday was a rare occasion so I took the opportunity to do a little rinse. I might be able to do the same again on Tuesday.

Re: Octopus saving sessions coming 1st Nov
Just thinking when the next saving session might be.
Later this week or mid next week, surplus power generation is looking a bit low.

Re: Octopus saving sessions coming 1st Nov
I've heard that the predicted cold-snap now won't happen (something about sudden stratospheric warming) so I thought that meant the prospects for a SS were off the cards.nowty wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2024 1:48 pm Just thinking when the next saving session might be.
