Some good news at last...
It seems that a big pumped storage scheme has sneaked in under the radar. I can't see that we have mentioned it anywhere, but at 1500 MW and (I think it said somewhere able to run for a day or two) it really is a biggie! It is going to be SW of Laggan locks, so quite a long way SW of the other one at Foyers.

It says 1500MW (30GWh), so at 1500MW that would still be 20hrs, but could easily be a day or two at lower output.

This has been around for a number of yrs having got planning permission with slightly different kw/kwh. SSE are waiting for the gov to give them security of investment as detailed in their summary

"In the drive to a net zero carbon electricity system, the UK government has created mechanisms to de-risk other electricity infrastructure investments to drive forward the low carbon agenda such as Contracts for Difference for nuclear power, offshore wind, onshore wind, and cap and floor support for interconnectors. There is currently no mechanism to de-risk electricity storage investment.

We are working proactively with Government and regulatory bodies to explore opportunities for securing investment in Coire Glas and other long term storage to secure the benefits to UK consumers and society that they bring"

An additional problem is that the project has to pay for the transmission line and then pay for using it both ways input and output. This is not a level playing field eg batteries,and things need to change. In the EU central gov/taxpayer etc pays for the transmission infrstructure after all it is for the benefit of all. This is just one reason why EU leccy is cheaper than UK

Actually it means grey Corrie (although to be fair there is a continum between grey and green and I'm not a native speaker so can't tell you where grey stops and green starts)

There is also Red John at the other end of the great glen which also has planning permission.

or a change in what seem to be stupid rules about paying network charges for import and export (if I have understood it right) which destroy the financial viability of energy storage. Another triumph of our "managed free market!" It guarantees that the City gets its pound of flesh though.

Anyone would think that mopping up excesses of renewable energy and storing it until needed was some sort of gimmick or frippery. Climate crisis? what crisis? Champagne still flows if you are sitting in the right seat...

If everything gets built that would mean, in about 50km stretching from the A9, along the great glen / Strathnairn &Stratherrick (basically the northern slopes of the Monadliath)

Plus there is Corrie Garth 2 (69 MW) (an extension of CorrieGarth) and a bunch which are basically extensions of the Glendoe / Stronelarig complex (Dell (42 MW), Cloiche (150MW), Glenshero (168 MW) all of which either already have planning permission or stand a reasonable chance of getting it as they are (sort of) building on existing sites.
