For those with house projects

Any news worthy story. Good things to watch at the Cinema, Theatre, on TV or have you read a good book lately?

Yep, cement is like rocking horse poop here too and some bricks, fruit and veg seems quite sparse in some of the supers too.

If its made of timber it's going up. I was over at a mates caravan a few weeks ago. Recently bought it and had put up a fence in the garden area. 3 of 8 mtr long by just over 1mtr high sides of thief's ladder style ranch fencing and a tiny deck for a small round table and 2 chairs. Nice job too. Asked me how much I thought it cost? I guessed about £800..... £2,500 for materials direct from a local sawmill. Absolutely mental!

I hope this will stimulate growth in the re-use of timber. When it was precious (being cut and sawn by hand or brought from the Baltic by sailing ship) there was a thriving market in second-hand wood. Lots of wooden ships were sold to be broken up for the wood salvage, and the beams in lots of old buildings (pubs especially - remember them?) show the marks and joints of their previous use(s.)
Lots of rafters and ceiling joists are suitable for re-use, just not on a factory or production-line scale.

I think the problem now is all the bureaucracy. I'm looking at steel work for my house. It's gone up 5% since my quote about 3 days ago. I have a load of steel that I bought new years ago to replace timber and old telegraph poles in a barn of mine. Now some of that would be suitable for the house, but now it all has to be CE marked, what I have isn't so I'm looking at buying new. (I must say though I still have a use for the steel for the barn though).

Why ?

I thought Brexit has given us the freedom we never had before  If we’ve left the EU, why does it need to be CE marked ?

 Thought we’d gone and gained freedom

Freedom from the EU. Not freedom from our own red tape and the clipboard wielding, busybody, jobsworths who enforce/interpret it!

It rolls on at the moment until the new replacement comes out - UKCA marking. :(

I'm just glad I'm getting on in age.

Me too!
What annoys me is that second-hand materials have always been used, usually perfectly safely (if rather over-strength/specified) and the so-called freedom from EU regulations has only resulted in lots of new legislation - and the requirement for manufacturers to put 2 lots of declarations on their products now!
"The UKCA marking is not recognised on the EU market. Products need a CE marking for sale in the EU!"
This rubbish reduces further the re-use of materials and shows yet again how shallow is the govt's commitment to reducing waste or saving energy. And increases the costs of producing stuff in the UK for wider sale.

It is easy to think that the building regs / planning systems are not fit for purpose. However once you understand that the real purpose is for it to be a big job creation scheme, it makes more sense.
