ASHP & triple glazing
ASHP & triple glazing
Thanks Govt! Read an article the other day about the likelihood of a multifaceted govt tax raid on pensions. After reading about the Winter heating allowance being stripped away from many I thought "they'll come for me in Oct".
As I'm now 55 i've decided to pull the 25% tax free portion of my SIPP's before they drop new limits or say no transitional period.
We were then left with the enviable question "what we gonna do with it".
I've been back onto Aberdeen air source heating to come out and firm up a quote for a 12kW ashp & 250 ltr HWT with ancillaries. Going to look at getting triple glazing in too. Might as well. we've stopped at external insulation until we see how it all works together.
Energy trust has 7.5k grant for ASHP & 8k for triple glazing. I've sent a contact form so we'll see how it goes.
Any input much appreciated. I'm also thinking about adding a triple glazed window into the gable end wall at staircase. More light and look at having that wall internally insulated at the same time. Its about 8 sq mtrs so would be nice to get it sorted.
Oh aye, new downstairs bathroom converted to a shower room and see about getting under the floor at the same time.

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
Hi Joe, I would seriously consider the EWI first with the triple glazing, this will then reduce the size of the heat pump required to keep you cosy, if you do the heat pump first then do the other stuff afterwards you run the risk of the HP being somewhat oversized and less efficient due to shorter cycles.
Also make sure the HP folk do a pukka heat loss calculation rather than a tick box style ipad sheet - they should be there 3 to 5 hours measuring and calculating if they're doing it in detail.

Cheers Moxi, I'll ask but the EWI is on the unlikely to happen list. SWMBO doesn't fancy it.Moxi wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 12:13 pm Hi Joe, I would seriously consider the EWI first with the triple glazing, this will then reduce the size of the heat pump required to keep you cosy, if you do the heat pump first then do the other stuff afterwards you run the risk of the HP being somewhat oversized and less efficient due to shorter cycles.

Everest managed to bounce themselves out of the chance to quote by making it about them, their wish for a teams call for a first chat and my measuring the windows. I set them straight then they tried twice more that i should measure, You've blown it. bye...
Away into town this afternoon to see a showroom of TG. ASHP survey booked for 7th Oct. I will certainly say to the guy that we are going from double to triple glazing. The house has had decent insulation retro fitted over the years internally. I'd likely go for the EWI but I don't like ramming my ideas too much. And then of course....

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
Hi JB, If EWI is off the cards thats ok because the HP as sized and fitted will not become oversized by dint of retro fitting insulation later.

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
If you do go ASHP remember and put in a monitoring system to give me some competition...
Thought I'd get a screenshot before the COP heads south with the weather turning colder.

Joe are you sure about the 8K grant as looks like it's an 8K loan?

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
I'll look again, cheers. TBH I don't need the grants or loan but if they do shove a grant at me....

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
Just had a look into the conditions of the Grants/Loans and unfortunately it says:
If you are making improvements to glazing, you can only use funding to improve single glazed windows. Funding is not available for replacing or improving existing double, triple or secondary glazing.

Just been into Thistle bridge of Don. Completely different quality to the current crap we've got fitted!
A guy coming out on Tuesday to quote.
14 windows
2 single doors
1 double patio door
3 velux
All to be triple glazed. Any guesses on a price anyone?
