A quick check yesterday evening deg c temps no heating on.

Low wall with kingspan fitted 20.9
Interior frame at start of beading edge 20.3
Glazing bar between panes 19.1
Internal pane 18.9
Outside frame 14.4

Image

I don't have a current frame of reference other that 3 degs difference between an insulated wall and a huge Glazing unit. Can't be good.

One more company DX home improvements from Bellshill Glasgow added to the remote quote list. With no disrespect to Bellshill that should be a good comparison quote against Aberdeen oil inflated prices.

I was quite surprised to see that the filling between the glass layers and the gap between the glazing really makes a difference so much so that high spec double glazing is almost as good as air filled TG - what really got me thinking was how a well insulated wall is still so much more beneficial than even TG. This being predicated on a typical U value of 1.6 for an insulated wall.

Made me wonder if putting a see through reflective foil on the inside of DG windows was a worth while thing to reflect heat back into the room ? It certainly "feels" like a good double glazed unit with a tertiary single glazed panel inboard of the window is probably as good.

All this came from a read of the Scottish Gov's Guidence on U values :

Table 6.A.1: Indicative U-values (W/m²K) for windows, rooflights, doors with wood or plastic frames [1]

Please let that be the record for this job. Salesman arrived at 13.30hrs I did say TG in the enquiry form.

Salesman departed at 13.32hrs.

CR Smith don't do triple glazing, tg is a gimmick really, tg doesn't have good thermal efficiency, it's really troublesome, we've never dealt in it. Places HUGE strain on the hinges (I'll accept this last at huge not HUGE as our openers are relatively small.

OK, next!

Everest failed
Anglian failed
Cr Smith failed

Thistle quoting Tuesday
Bon Accord quoting Wednesday
Pinefield glass quoting Thursday

Advanced group in East Kilbride & DX home improvements Bellshill quoting off drawings before survey.

What a time!

I signed up on buildhub today and what with hearing repeating questions and advice i've started to put together a small list of what really matters (for me). I hope it is of help to others. Throw in your thoughts if you want to add to it?

Ug value good
Uw value better

Frame spec matters as does the x sectional build to maximise air pockets.

How are the windows mounted?

How are the windows internally and externally sealed?

Hinges matter as does the size of opener, less is better but escape path is critical?

Window builder through to installer is the preferred route to avoid any "he said, she said".

Is there a spec to look for in Uw & Ug for thermal efficiency? No point my paying for 0.5 Uw if the house can't keep up?

Wondering on opinions/experience on South facing v's North? Does it affect the 3g unit build. Is there a way to let more heat through on South side and block more exiting on the North in the glazing unit build?

I have been quoted 1.3 down to 0.9 so far (Uw) depending on the spec of the frame & glazing for 3g. Great chart Moxi, i'll be currently about the Uw 2.7 value on our 2g if very fortunate. Could be poorer as the oldest 2g units are getting on for 20 years and the newer are about 15 years. Its the linear metres of less than perfect air leaks around the frame edges and of course the sq mtrs of glazing that are killing me in my mind. All just potentially pishing heat out.

The surveys commence tomorrow for real. Fingers crossed. :xx:

Had a few phonecalls today as well which lifted spirits in regard to the soul of the glazing industry.

Our first quite from Everest a few years ago was 42k!
After speaking to his manager they quoted 27k
After laughing in his face and then telling him to leave he said 17k
They phoned me back 3 days later with 14k
And we settled on 10.5k

Bare in mind with all of these companies stating 25 year guarantee....it's not worth the paper it is written on.

We have Everest windows that are roughly 16 years old and some have failed i.e they are not performing as expected. We were wanting to get Everest to replace these but apparently they have gone bust several times since they were installed. Each time they restart, they are technically a new company meaning that they do not have to replace your windows as it was done by the old company who have zero affiliation with the new one....just a name.
3kW FIT Solar
0.8kW balcony solar.
2,372 W of turbine at Whitelaw Brae

2 WBS. Stovax 8kw and 5kw Morso squirrel
Rointe D series in 2 bedrooms and bathroom.
Aiming to go fully electric....

Appreciated guys, thank you for the perspectives. I am aiming to get 6 quotes, get in about details then drop down to 3 quotes, refine those further and set them at each other.
