Spent a wee bit of time this morning grooving on the various ways to thermal break and isolate the windows and extending outward, sills & reveals. Well worth that bit of reflection on how where etc.

Even did an introduction and query A4 sheet (half sheet) for the survery on the 4th Oct. Hopefully won't frighten the contractor excessively!

Very much looking forward to introducing SWMBO to Germany next week. A couple of days in Koln.before following the river South (by road).

Not been on for a while, and not read the entire thread.
Instead of triple glazing Joe, have you thought about external roller shutters on the windows?
You only really need the windows to perform when the sun is down, which is when we draw curtains anyway, so rolling down shutters would not hamper that, but would create a lovely air gap that should out perform triple glazing.
Add in some home automation and the house gets battened down and opened up automatically depending on sunrise and sunset.

Its something ive been thinking about here.
Im currently making a mould for a lightweight but insulated GRP storm door that we can hang in autumn to insulate the front door. If we had room for a porch or inner door, that would be ideal, but we dont.

I’ve gone with internal black out blinds to try and achieve the same goal.
External shutters would insulate far better I suspect, but aesthetically the blinds look good. They were covering 12 bi-fold aluminium doors, overlooking the garden, and one largish window. It’s a failrly large room to heat with UF heating

Seen an incredible amount of large scale solar and wind farms on the drive from Rotterdam to Cologne. Really massive turbines! Raining but we are are on a terrace having a cold Kolsch.

Lots of aluminium shutters and low depth but high gabion fences too. Solar roof on the terrace bar.

Travel does broaden the mind. Swmbo spotted the texture and pattern on the glazing system in a houseboat pub we were in.

Photo No8 is for dan, a very old skool bi amp!

One phonecall to the window supplier and they'll have matt and foil print (woodgrain) samples ready for the survey on the 4th Oct. That's a cracking service. 😀
