My impression, just two years ago was one of good cooperation with the rest of Europe.

A large amount of (even fossil derived) generated power was exported to Europe at the outset of the russian invasion of Ukraine. CNG gas was imported and used for electricity generation in the UK because the delivery facilities on the european continent were inadequate at the time of the reduced supplies from russia.

Have things changed?

I read that article as

"we want to use your infrastructure to allow us to take advantage of the North Sea wind resource and to do that we want you to align your systems with ours please so that we are trading on a level footing"

Not so sure about the mutually beneficial bit as normally they (collectively) argue all around every possible thing that is generally perceived as beneficial to the avergae person in the street.

It will be beneficial to the reduction in CO2 for everyone - globally so that's a good thing.

My personal view is we should be assisting the EU as much as practicable in harvesting the valuable renewable resource in the North Sea Basin, it would be really refreshing if we could do it without rancour and arguments and generally develop a new mutually beneficial working arrangement - but then again as a Welsh Yorkshireman I am an external optimist

Surely the more we cooperate with Europe the better for all - we potentially become a significant exporter of RE and we join a network that may enable us to access Moroccan RE via a Spanish-Morocco interconnector.

Whilst I accept this questions energy independence, but I’m sure we need to be part of bigger systems.

Remember AZPS and his article The UK is the Saudi Arabai of Wind Energy from 2012. We have vast potential to supply/sell huge amounts of RE, ideally becoming a net exporter, which might solve the problems of reach 'net' 100% low carbon energy.

So if mainland Europe want it, we'd be fools not to try to maximise the potential.

Thinking back to Desertec, and the idea of linking up countries potential, the UK was listed as the off-shore wind giant (Germany bio-energy (I think), N. Africa PV, Norway hydro/batteries ...... and many more of course).

My reason for saying "Brexit" is that before we left the EU, we were a fully active member of the Internal Energy Market and European Energy Exchange.


In the words of the Government at the time

"From 1 January 2021 cross-border flows across electricity interconnectors will no longer be governed by EU legislation which provides for efficient trade and cross-border cooperation in operating the electricity system. The UK’s exclusion from the EU’s IEM could mean an increased energy system
investment cost of £500 million per year. "

Yes we do continue to sell electricity via our interconnectors, but it's a less automated, and more expensive system and we're on the outside looking in.

They already own nearly all our infrastructure and leaving us with poorer outcomes whilst returning the profits not to the UK and therefore not paying tax to the UK government and hence the budget we are going to get.
