I like the 15p per kWh export figure but also like the idea that in some tiny way we are helping adjust the load in our respective areas.

Over 1,250,000 ev's on uk roads. At a guessed average of 40kWh packs per. That would be 50,000,000kWh potential storage that will likely be distributed evenly across population density. 25% of that being exported at 17.00 to 21.00hrs would be 12,500,000kWh taken off peak hours and sent to the graveyard shift for charging. Looks good to me.

This stuff is only profitable if it is only us weirdos doing it. A million EVs charging on off-peak and discharging at peak time totally removes the supply-demand imbalance. And it fits with typical EV usage too, a commuter might get home at 6pm with 60% battery, the car can then discharge another 20% into the grid over the next 2hrs and recharge back up to 80% in the small hours ready for the morning.

We might find ourselves in the position that lots of countries are in on sunny days where there is too much solar on the grid…

That would be ideal for me, as I need to swap the Tesla at the end of this month, but have 3 other EVs to charge. Added to my charger issues currently( pun intended) it has been hard to manage charging with export as I’ve got to charge some of the cars at a lower rate to avoid tripping the main board.
I’ve considered doubling the BESS but a £5k+ outlay with V2G on the horizon seems a tad risky.

How long is a piece of string? They spent years “working” on a house battery and then launched a rebadged version of something that’d been on the market for years!

I had a look on the Zappi V2G website:

I think they're showing a tesla 3 or Y connected via an AC cable to a new V2G-Zappi.
The only teardown of the internal Tesla charger I've seen showed a uni-directional 3 phase -> DC car battery charger, but there are repeated rumours that bidirectional internal Tesla chargers exist, or will exist soon.

So far as I'm aware, only a few DC chademo connected cars have V2G presently available; AC connected V2G would be a significant improvement, as AC cables are simpler and safer and there's no duplication of electronics so the overall solution is cheaper.

We had a V2G bidirectional charger with our leaf for 3 years, as part of various trials (completed, gave the unit away) - now we have a home battery and extra solar. The home batt we have now is hands down better, that is mostly down to better software rather than anything fundamentally wrong with V2G.

Musk has said repeatedly that Tesla cars are-not and will-never-be V2G. This is because he thinks the battery should be stationary and attached to your house. However I’ve never understood why the mahoosive battery in your EV cannot be used to complement the one in your house!

Those tearing down Tesla EVs looking for a “bi-directional charger in the car” are demonstrating their lack of understanding of how V2G will work. The inverter will sit outside the car and use the DC contacts. As such there is no hardware limitation preventing existing Type2 CCS Tesla EVs from working with a V2G charger except for the fact that this function is blocked in software.

I really don’t understand the delay, the device we require is almost identical to a solar inverter. It’ll take the 400V (or 800V if you’re posh) from the EV battery and convert it to 230V AC and squirt it in sync with the grid. The only special part is that it needs to talk to the car to close the DC contacts, but how hard can that be?
