... to go with the V4 stalls, which will mean much higher voltages and therefore higher charging power for those 800V vehicles (Kia/Hyundai/ Porsche/CyberTruck etc)

I have yet to get plugged in to a 300KW charger with the EV six but I did recently get on a 150kW with only 23 percent in the battery and that was a fast charge to 80% so the bigger chargers really must be light the old fill up at the pump times! I'm not sure I am ready for that as I have gotten used to and enjoy the twenty minute break while the car chargers :cry: I tend to find the 125kW charger to be the best for charge and time to stretch and the 50kW is just perfect if you are going in for a sit down bite to eat. I think the trend to mixed charging at service stations is a nice option and allows people with different needs to charge accordingly - just need charger etiquette to become embedded to stop idiots blocking super fast chargers when they are not in a rush.

Wifey used V4 stalls when popping to Scotland, but of course operating at V3 levels. That said I don't think our LR TMY can go over 250kW anyway. She took a pic for me, showing it was charging (briefly) at 238kW, but only just under 30% SOC, so slowed down soon after.

I remember Dan sending a pic showing his TM3 charging at ~250kW, and just over 1,000mph. Mind blowing, wonder how long it will be before this stuff seems normal?

Rapid charging an EV shouldn't try to replicate fueling an ICEV!

100kW is plenty! It allows you to add 100miles of range in 15 mins. That is just enough time to use the toilet and buy a coffee. Why do you need faster?

Anytime you're stood next to your car waiting for it to charge, you're doing it wrong!

Depends upon how big the battery is, how (in)efficient the vehicle is, and how long your journey is I guess? If you're packing a 120kWh battery and your vehicle only does 2 miles/kWh you'll want a faster charge!

But I agree that for most reasonably sized passenger cars, there's little to be gained with charging speeds over 200kW - you're talking a couple of minutes max - and even in my TM3 whilst it can hit 250kW it'll only do so for only a few minutes when at low SoC and at the right temperature - the overall average charge rate for a 10-80% session is much lower than that.

Agreed!

I've long said that the ideal BEV needs the following:
  • 50kWh battery.
  • 4mi/kWh on the motorway in winter.
  • 100kW charging.
If you do 150-200miles on your first hop, then stop for 15mins every 100 miles thereafter, you can get anywhere you want to get.

The car taking 15mins to charge is way more convenient than 5 mins anyway. This is because you can plug in, walk to the building, have a pee, buy a coffee, and walk back to the car in 15mins. Whereas a 5 min charge means you'd have to park in a non-charging space while you go for a pee and buy a coffee then move to a charger and wait by your car while it charges...

The only people I can imagine need a fast charge a la ICE style is the police, the reps and salespeople on the road to their next job and even then most of them would benefit from a 15 to 20 minute break away from the vehicle.

This is welcome news I've only ever got 125kw out of a Tesla charger but can easily get 210kw out of proper 350kw stations.

Normal for me is 200kwh flat curve from 10 to 80%.

The charge curve is pretty much flat since it's two 400V E-GMP next to each other with two extra modules on the end.

I don't know for sure but at the Tesla stations the voltage seems low so it's having to boost it.
