ASHP & triple glazing
Re: ASHP & triple glazing
I my opinion, I think it comes down to mindset.
From what I can see, most people here are engineers, scientists or people who work in technical fields. So I think it is a case that most of us are problem solvers and look for a solutions where possible - and also think longer term.
Most people in the general population, from my experience at least, just seem to accept the status quo and not look at it like a problem that needs to be solved. This is either through ambivalence, laziness or pure dis-interest in making things better for themselves.
I mean as an example - I regularly see people willing to pay someone to assemble flat pack items - or pay someone to clean an oven etc. and whilst I don't know the exact circumstances I would assume any able bodied person who is capable of reading and understanding basic instructions can do these things without needing to pay someone else £50 or more to do it.
So my thoughts are that - yes they complain - but the cost is not sufficient enough to push those that can change to actually make a change, but I do understand for lots of people change will not be possible (i.e. renters, those living pay packet to pay packet etc.).
I think I am probably with all of you on the paying some of these mandatory costs .... but I will expand that to everything I am forced to pay that I don't think I am getting value from - not just standing charges!

Morning, I see it is -1 in the Shire with a feels like of -7!
How's the ashp working then Iain? Is this a first harsh test?
Gear going on site today so I guess I could say job begins today!
Looking forward to this below being a thing of the past.

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
Heat pump monitoring system said down to -7.9C during the night and looking at the graphs it has done quite a number of defrosts using 7kWh to clear the ice.
Below is a 19.5hr run (average temp -4C, COP 3.07. COP was 3.31 whilst at -7.9C) from about 4pm yesterday:
Whilst on the 16th November starting at the same time and again 19.5hr run (average temp 2.8C COP 4.17) but with no defrosts:
This has been the coldest since the heat pump was installed and house still at a very comfortable 24C.
Oh, and it is still snowing.

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
Fintray, do you run with the A2A HP(s) as well as the ASHP or does the ASHP suffice ?

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
A CoP above 3 in those temperatures is still excellent especially when the house is sat at a very cosy 24 degrees, we only hit -1 last night and the LPG boiler kept us at 21.5 degrees until bed time when I knocked it back to 18 degrees around 10:30, thereafter the cottage slowly cooled down to 18.6 degrees at 07:00 when the temperature in the lounge started to increase again due to dogs and humans being in the room and some surplus kitchen breakfast heat (kettle and toaster) maybe contributed. Outside temp is 4 degrees, snow flurries but not settling and the cottage has increased temperature to 19.2 degrees.
I keep looking at the heat pumps and then remind myself we are not ready yet!
Theres a section of outside wall (where my desk is situated) thats not got any EWI on it as they wouldnt do awkward to get to areas when the fitted it Its around 3square meters in a sheltered alcove - I think before I do much else I need to do some DIY EWI to that section to improve the efficiency of that cold corner of the lounge - its away from view so even if I mess up the surface coating finish no one will know and anything has to be better than the nothing thats there on the 600mm thick solid stone wall presently.
It wont be anything special just 150mm depth of jablite sheets with mesh over and some of that plasticoat render stuff that goes on around 1mm thick - the finish materials is the bit I need to educate myself about before I start though because as you see from my description I am a little light on hard detail.
It will probably all be sourced from B&Q because theres not enough materials to buy in and have delivered.

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
The A2A HP is just in the conservatory and was installed there to ensure the temperature never went below freezing when the previous oil heating was off. So far the undersized old radiator in there has been enough to keep the temperature from dropping too far so the A2A HP hasn't been running.
Though if we want to sit in the conservatory the A2A HP will be switched on.

My own fault for letting temps fall back. Got a 17deg capsule upstairs, the rest of the house even with SH's on is the realm of the Whitewalkers!
What an amount of gear in the garage! HP is sitting on the drive. It's an impressive beastie.

Ah well at least you will see the benefit straight away rath than getting a new heating system mid summer!
