It's all happening! Received a direct quote from a quality blind manufacturer for two electric blinds for the awkward trapezoidal windows. £2,500 for the pair... That's self fit too.

They also quoted to do the full set of 6 in the big rear room. That's two trapezoidal, two rectangular windows, a French door set and a full height single door. £4,200. Again, this is a self install direct from factory quote.

This is the full Blofeld baddie type deal. Electric motors,
Lithium ion battery packs, solar panels, charging wands and remote controls.

In an excellent piece of synchronicity I'm in Edinburgh at daughterlys. I contacted an already quoting (they've got the drawing but slow to provide figures) outlet for fancy blinds in the city. They have a by appointment only system at their Edinburgh shop . So I'm viewing their wares this morning at 11am before heading up the road.

Blinds are one of the few things I absolutely detest installing. Not sure why that is the case but it most certainly is. Let's see what the Edinburgh price comes out at? I may yet be heavily into blind installing.

My local blind firm in the Shire didn't do electric blinds in trapezoidal and were limited in choice at the full 2300mm single window width to match in the six set in what they could provide.

What I did see in the Shire shop even though they didn't have exactly what we needed was a very obvious difference in grades of quality. SWMBO was with me and unnervingly went directly to the top end one, bypassing at lrast ten other options. She's got a hell of an eye!

With this in mind and knowing I want a good look to the room I pretty much know that I'll be paying the 4.2 and fitting myself. I expect Edinburgh to quote at up around £7k but maybe they'll surprise me?

Mental eh? Wide awake at 3am ready to get into it!

I feel relief that I've actually managed to get a quote as the choicr is not huge. I'll need to buy a decent quality aluminium stepladder as my old one I've been using for decades is a bit dodgy and difficult at that sort of height. Always enjoy a tool upgrade.

How the hell have I ended up in a situation where I'm going to a by appointment shop. Class traitor!

Good to know that, cheers. The 4.2k isn't far away from where I thought we'd be fully fitted & automated. I'll look for a third supplier ( maybe Hilarys) to compare against for the 3 quotes. I've found the whole ashp/triple glazing/blinds to have huge variance in pricing and not just price goes up quality goes up either!

At the top end of quotes I'd have been about £58,000 paid out. In the end I'll be about £29,000 with grant and groundfloor upgraded pipework and i'll know the triple glazing is about as high as I can go for top Uw value. Our old upvc frames will go forward as new Liniar 2 or 3g frames too. I like that.

We've already had £300 back of the £29,000 from the reduced electricity bought and the environmental change in the house is truly incredible. This has been the best way I could think of to dig into the taxfree pension money. Well, apart from the van.

Good luck with the pour Ron, that's a milestone right there. I liked the vibration tool advice for settling. I'd not heard of that. Are ye hand mixing in a barra or rotary mixer?

Edit- we are 800kWh less power bought this month and we have exported 275kWh as well. That's all down to the ashp and would not even have been imagined this time last year.

Luckily I've got a mixer, bought it many, many years ago, it takes up space in the garage, but when it's needed it's very handy to have.

A mixer is a huge work-multiplier! Not only does it do the most labour-intensive part, you can be barrowing and forming the previous batch while the mixer does its thing. Once you get in a rhythm you can get a lot done!

I had an excellent time today in Edinhurgh. Bought some solvent weld for van awning repair, got a water based flat varnish sample from an American Co as a sample for interior woodwork in the van and had an excellent 45 mins with the blinds folk. They are quoting me for the same set of 6 blinds, automated.but a different everything. By this I mean the components that make up the blind are all.different manufacturers from the first 4.2k quote. They'll also do diy and I'll look to collect the blinds from them if the price is reasonable.
