Jump Starter
Jump Starter
Bought a s/h ebike last September and thought I might need an extra range extender battery for it, but was wrong. The bike's range is phenominal as is.
So I am wondering if I could use the 48v spare battery for a vehicle jump starter with a suitable current limiting device? Is there such a thing available please? The battery has a substansial Andersen type socket.

Seems like a lot of effort though. You’d need to reconfigure the 48V pack to 12V (or 24V depending what your jumping). Then you’d need to beef up the connections/cables to handle much higher current. I haven’t jump started a car since the 1990s! Why not just fix the vehicle you need to jumpstart, or put it on a trickle charger?

Re: Jump Starter
The e-bike battery is most likely lithium. Can it handle the high currents needed to jump start?
Re: Jump Starter
Loads of lithium jump packs these days. High current is fine for a short period.
This one is the market leader: https://amzn.eu/d/dPV8Vf4
However, I guess, the commercial products will have the required temperature protections…

Re: Jump Starter
Thanks for the replies. Perhaps I didn't explain myself fully. Quite often the vehicle concerned is no where near a mains connection when the problem arises, and what I would use the 48v battery for is to fast charge the vehicle over a period, say 20 mins.

Re: Jump Starter
A small solar panel seems like a better solution...
Or maybe sell the additional battery for your ebike and buy a proper jump starter similar to the one I linked to above?

That is a cracker! We see loads of that style zipping about in Turkey. Swmbo has recently suggested we get a pair for the back of the van. It's a good bit of kit?
