Quick news update on the foster fails from last Sep/Oct:

Toby has finally reached(ish) his target weight of 34kg ....... or to be a little more honest, he's reached 34.9kg, but it starts with 34 finally. He was 42kg when he arrived, and was one long large curve, but now has many curves.

Not such great news for the Cookie Monster. He's exhasuted every drug available to solve his need to scratch his neck. He's mostly healed, but still wears a cone and protective snood (piece of wrist bandage). He gets time out each morning and evening, when we take it all off, but has to be watched like a hawk. At times he's been on 3 different drugs at the same time, but still no success.

There's also concern about the long term harm from the drugs and steroids, and his quality of life with a cone on all the time, especially as he's only 1yr old.

So today he's gone in for an op, that the vet has never recommended before, and is banned if for cosmetic purposes. And that's to be de-clawed. Fingers crossed (bad pun?) he will only have his rear claws, and front dewclaws removed, but this won't be nice, and may impact his abilities especially outside. If it all goes well, he can have the cone removed, and if he seems to manage ok(ish) around the house, then we hope to be able to allow him outside eventually. Currently he lays at the conservatory doors and chirps through the glass at the cats and dogs outside.

But he's a sweet boy, and though smallish, weighs in at over 5kg and is built like a tank, more Staffie than svelt kitty. So I suspect he'll cope well. :xx:

News update on the latest failed fosters.

Toby (ex guide dog) is now officially lean. He's hit his 34kg target (down from 42kg in Sept), with an impressive 34.3kg. Now we need to just slowly increase his food to stop the weight loss and he's done.

And Cookie Monster is fully recovered from his toe surgery. He's down from 18 claws to just 8 (on the front) but is managing fine. Only significant change we've noticed is that he slides on smooth surfaces, like tiles and windowsills, but he's learning. We took the plunge and let him go outside, and he was great. And comes to a call, unlike all the other cats we've had.

He's also down from 4 different meds, to just a small dose of one, but doesn't seem obsessed with ripping the flesh off the back of his head anymore. Hoping to end that med too at next (possibly last) vet visit.

Only one big thing left to do .... we somehow have to break the news to them both, that they're adopted! :cat-shock:

Big Doyle looks like our Jaffa in size terms ! We are visiting st Ives this week but when we get home we are taking delivery of a tabby kitten who was in need of a home, he’s only moving about 750m from his house in the village to ours so not a big upheaval for him but the lads are completely unaware of the new family member so they’re going to be very surprised.

Well you can't win em all!

Took the dogs round the local park and lake that we've been visiting most days since about 2001. The council lease the fishing rights to a club, and after a pause from 1st April till late May, for spawning, had resumed their fishing.

Wifey and I were standing at an empty fishing spot, admiring the signets, who are almost duck sized now, when Toby started to act funny and cough. We realised he had a length of fishing line hanging out of his mouth. I tried to pull it out, but only some came, before it went tight and I was wary to pull harder, then he bit through it.

We watched him carefully yesterday and he seemed fine, then started to throw up this morning. Vets advised us to give him a small bit of food and see if he was sick again, which he was, so in we took him.

Yep ...... x-rays show a fishing hook stuck in his stomach.

Current estimated bill is £2,219. Now that's painful all-round.

I'm a tad annoyed. The park is a council park, and they lease the fishing rights to a club. They shouldn't leave any rubbish behind, but fishing line with a hook attached, in the grass, is really dumb.

Gets worse. Wifey was taking him to Peterborough on Monday as part of a short holiday to visit a lovely lady who gave us tonnes of advice on guide dog puppy raising when we were noobs, but has since moved (from S. Wales) to be nearer family. We'd managed to track down Toby's puppy raisers, the folk who have the pup till about 14months, when they go for full time training. They adored Toby, and live in England about 20mins off Wifey's route, so she was going to see them. And they'd arranged for all the family to be in that day to see Toby who was one of their favourites.

The best laid plans of mice and men!

Well that sucks, hope the op goes smoothly for him and have you considered a small claims approach for negligence against the council or the fishing club - they will both have insurance.

Bodhi doesn't know it yet but he's off for the golden brick operation on Monday so hes going to be sporting the cone of shame and feeling a might out of sorts Monday night.

May sound cruel, but at least you'll get to laugh at Bohdi trying to negotiate the house with the cone on. Cookie was a dab hand after about 6 months wearing one. But now when he runs at the ginga's they stand their ground, as he doesn't have the massive head/hood of a freaky looking lion anymore.

Toby is fine, op went well, but took ages as they struggled to track it down. Started in the stomach, and ended up in the intestines. And then they couldn't pull the line back through his intestines as it was caught at both ends somehow. Hook had to be snipped in two to get it out, and finally a metre of line came free that had used grass to form a plug. Vet reckons he wouldn't have made it if left another day, as the line was acting as an abrasive cutting tool after anchoring at two points and pulling taut. Poor ickle Toby, and speaking of ickle, probably due to all the vomit, but his weight was spot on 34kg, the target we were set when he arrived last Sept at 42kg. Hopefully that made life easier, if only to move him around.

Been in touch with the council and asked for a claim form. I'm a believer in 'Shit happens', and not litigious, but dropping line with hooks on the grass is not the action of a responsible fisherperson, especially in a public park.

Back to the fun stuff. Dropped into the rescue yesterday with 20 bags of wood pellets I'd gone to collect, and saw a couple of cute little kittens:

Our new kitten is coming home on Friday, his parents only live in the village so he might see them once in a while if he takes to going across the common and pasture.

You are correct crap does happen but it’s not litigious to ask for the damage to be made good at their expense. If you accidentally knocked down a council fence or wall you would be served with a bill for repairs and this is their tenants neglect so you shouldn’t be out of pocket, it’s bad enough that Toby has had a close call and is in discomfort.

Hoping that the op helps Bodhi calm a bit more - he’s making great progress but there’s definitely hormones starting to make an appearance in some of his behaviour so best that we get that sorted before he gets into a fight or becomes a dad.

I will try and get a cone of shame photo to share but for now here’s 1.4m of relaxed puppy.
