I think the expensive batts which produce nothing are non starter and cheap gen is the only thing that makes sense. Use BP ultimate fuel as it does not contain ethonol to go off.

Not particularly sustainable though. ;)

Thanks for a the replies. To answer a few questions;

We are two properties. Ours on a separate, single phase (comes from the same pole but separate meter) connection to the other. I'm not too stressed about backu for us, we have non electric heating and cooking ability.

Theirs is on a split phase connection but everything of theirs is on one of the phases. So a 3pg generator wouldn't be that helpful, unless it were connected to the pole!

Have been moving away from big storage systems, IF I go that route it'd be just a 3kW inverter and 5 - 10kWh of batteries. Having checked their bills, a bigger system won't pay its way.

The benefit of a little battery system and a generator would be that I could get a tiny inverter genny 1-3kW that'd be able to run everything with a battery buffer. As mentioned, keeping back a significant portion of electric just in case there's a power cut is ridiculous. They're fewand far between here.
5kW Evance WT
3x 4kW PV arrays
Lots of diverters and thermal storage.

Business side;
40kW PV
Heat recovery on refrigeration plant
More diverters here for hot water.
